Influences show up in the strangest places [More:]

This was Keith Moon's favorite song. And it's also the song I put on to convince Beach Boys doubters. Nobody but nobody does male vulnerabilty like Brian Wilson. It still hits like a ton of bricks 40 years down the line

Don't Worry Baby - Beach Boys

Jimmy Page and several other guitarists have been quoted as saying that James Burton's solo on the following is what made them want to play guitar. It also proves that Ricky Nelson was way more than just another teen idol.

Hello Mary Lou - Ricky Nelson

Hope you like 'em. because if you don't you have no soul.

All praise the jonmc, the pope of rock

*extends ring to be kissed*

(all kidding aside, this is the kinda stuff you gotta listen to if you wanna understand the deep heart of rock and roll)

Excommunicated anybody this week? It looked like you came close in the prog rock thread. heh.

I still hate the Beach Boys. I have no soul. (Does that mean I'm a big legged woman?)

jrossi4r, just drop all your pre-suppositions and just listen to the song I posted. It's fucking heartbreaking...
posted by jonmc 03 February | 21:15
jrossi4r, I suspect you've heard the Mike Love era Beach Boys. These are, in fact the anti-Beach Boys. It's only the real deal if Brian Wilson is on board.

jon, I usually use "God Only Knows" for this sort of thing. Never fails. When I get home, I'll post it.

Honestly, jonmc, I understand why I should like the Beach Boys. I just don't. (I think it's the high voices. I don't like a lot of female singers either. Anything high pitched is like a knife through my skull.)

And bmarkey, God Only Knows is on my list of "tolerable" Beach Boy songs. As is Wouldn't It Be Nice.

"Don't Worry Baby" is just exquisite though. pips used to be a hata, too, but I convereted her. read the Brian Wilson chapter in Nick Kent's The Dark Stuff. It'll make you see them in a whole new light.

Did you like the Ricky at least?

We have home movies of my cousins, sisters and I holding a memorial service for Ricky Nelson the day after he died. My aunt was president of the Philly chapter of his fan club. Nothing but love for Ricky.

"Don't Worry Baby"... well jon, we finally have some musical common ground. That's one of my favorite Beach Boys songs, and I love the (Brian Wilson) Beach Boys.
posted by mosch 03 February | 21:49
don't worry baby is truly wonderful, but the ricky nelson isn't.
posted by amberglow 03 February | 22:35
Oh come on, amber, that's some fierce guitar. and Ricky means it, unlike, say, Frankie Avalon, so even if you don't dig it, give the man his props.

But much respect for acknowledging the sheer genius of "Don't Worry Baby." That's one of the few songs that will make me publicly weep.

Thanks once again for the downloads, jonmc. If your disk ever crashes I got 'em all for you right here.

Except the ones that are less than 100kbps.

Thanks for posting those. I'd not bothered to rip my Beach Boys stuff and Don't Worry is my favorite song of theirs. And I'd never really payed attention to the solo in Mary Lou. It's pretty cool.

Don't Worry is just an amazing song. I always wish it was longer when I listen. It just hooks when he sings "...for I don't know how long."

Man, I gotta get a good set of headphones or a bigger house. Having to listen with the volume way down (tot's sleeping, ya know) just doesn't do it justice. I've always loved the Beach Boys.

The Ricky Nelson is decent. I've always loved Del Shannon's Runaway for, I think the same reasons you love this, especially when it really starts wailing.

As promised:

The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (mono mix, as God and Brian intended)

This song will be played at our wedding. And when those harmonies come swooping in at the end, I will cry like a fucking baby in front of God and everybody. And I won't care.

Rick Nelson was fabu - Garden Party, baby. As for the Beach Boys - In My Room is my absolute fave.

I love me some Del too. "Keep Searchin'" is a monster song.
