AskMechat: Sending money to Zimbabwe. I'm asking a question for a very concerned friend of mine, who has a friend in Zimbabwe she supports by sending money, to help her and her children.[More:]

(Bear with me here, I'm serious, this isn't a 419 scam...)

As you know, the situation in Zimbabwe is pretty dire, and the money she has been sending has apparently been going missing lately. Money she has sent by international money transfer or by bank transfer is "Taxed" by the government at 25%, and the remainder is paid to her friend in the local currency, not the USD she sent, making it pretty worthless. She has tried mailing actual cash, but that gets intercepted and never arrives at all.

Any suggestions on how to carry out this sort of person-to-person charity under circumstances like this? Any organisations who might be of assistance? My friend is in Australia by the way, but the problem's on the other end, so any suggestions from the bunnies would be helpful.
does FedEx or UPS deliver there? they're more secure.

Well, she's used international money transfer companies (I assume Western Union) and they money's been "taxed" at the other end. Whether delivery by courier would work would depend on how they get the money to the country. Money is being stolen at customs, and I assume UPS or FedEx would go through the same customs service as the rest of the imports. But I'll ask her if she's tried that (FedEx do claim to deliver to Zimbabwe).

Seems that if money was stolen from FedEx/UPS at customs, and you'd declared the value or bought insurance, FedEx would have to cover the cost. No?
