Did she ask you what a comment with '.' meant?

I just taught my mom how to cut and paste text. She said "that is the coolest thing!" She's had a computer for years, and still uses WordPerfect, which I didn't even know existed anymore. Sheesh.

The End.

Oh wait, I know! I bet she forgot to compose her "more inside" before posting!

My dad has just discovered how much fun it is to forward jokes and such-like to me.

Yeah, me. *sigh* I thought I had taught her better.

To paraphrase redman, I'll all about three things; smoking, talkin' shit and ownz0ring your moms.

My mom thinks AOL = the internet. Awww.

I know someone who runs DOS 5 on a 386 because Wordperfect for DOS is the only wordprocessor he feels comfortable using.

the tech phone calls are murder.

That was phase 1, hellbient and matildaben: translating WP docs into, er, .doc files. We have gotten over that. But not by much. The issue today was transferring a file to me over AIM. We have the same OS and despite very precise (says me) directions we got lost and she felt like a n00b. That's no g00d. :-(

It would be fun if she was stupid (but then I'd probably be stupid too). As it is I am seeing so much wasted potential. My mother would love the internet if she could get comfortable with it.

Yipee! I just got a day job!

Lemme guess, helping your mom with the internet?

[Just kidding, that's great! Congradges, and what's the job?]

My dad is actually reasonably smart with the computer, he's just set in his ways the way senior citizens are entitled to be. He actually has AdAware and knows how to use the Task Manager.
posted by matildaben 31 January | 17:23
Over xmas, I had to put Ad-Aware, etc. on my dad's computer, despite his protests that he did not need it. Several hundred critical objects later, he got the point.

The saddest part is that my dad is in his early 50s and spent the past 20 years (up until 2 years ago)working in the computer industry...

So it goes... :-D

Thanks! I start work here on Thursday! They will take down the "help wanted" ad three weeks after the Christmas stuff, I'm sure. It seems like a very cool place (I did two shifts last Thursday and Friday and they are kind people and certain perks appeal...)

YAY Cryptical!

Fuckin' A! First day job in a decade and I WILL LOVE IT AND WORK HARD.

Meet Steve Jobs, my man...

Coincidentally I had to chew at a distance the first day on the job. Doesn't everybody. It was awkward.

My dad got pwned by a Macintosh! He has PhD in research science and he can't figure out how to open an enclosure in LOL AOL mail.

My mother has no idea what this OS can do for her. :-(

Smart lady, old school. Damn.

I sent my mum three Red Hat iso CD's and she installed Linux on her crappy old PC, calling for help only once! (and all that happened was that we ended up chatting about the news while she installed Red Hat. Multitasking!)

*beams with pride*

This made me laugh out loud, and every time I read it I laugh again. The thought of an elite hacker (whatever the hell that is...are there hacker class levels?) going after some random clueless mom just makes me giddy, I guess.

WP 5.1 was the ultimate word proccessor, it has been a downhill ride of overwhelming feature creep ever since.

I think leet (1337) is without a doubt one of the stupidest things I've ever seen, but I can't help using it (ironically) at any chance I get. It's just so fucking funny!

Leet is the new trucker hat.

Oh yeah. Once, I knew every single WP5.1 F-key function by heart and never used the template. People thought I was a fucking genius and always asked me for help.

Actually, not much has changed. Now, people think I am a fucking idiot and always ask me for help.

(DOS 5 is a word processor? What planet have I been living on or am I just getting it confused? Nothing to do with quick and dirty operating system?)
