Jehus Chris this is so boring. I don't even know what I'm doing here. It's not like I've produced anything in the last month.
I think I have made a dozen icons and half a screen layout, The problem is there is no motivation to do anything, and the worst part is nobody even knows what I do. I have been working on my own projects for the last month, surfing the web or playing with my pda. To them it all looks the same. I'm not expected to hit milestones, or have deadlines. The project has a deadline, I think, I heard it was March. That's when it's supposed to be launched for our first big client. The higher up-s haven't told us that's the date though. I heard that from a coworker. It would seem that he and maybe a couple other people are the only ones interested in keeping it on track. In any other office I would have a project to do. with a set deadline. "Hey man, are you finished with scraping that HTML?" "No, it'll take another hour".
I don't mind this free "choose your own project-adventure" system but it might work better if i knew what the scope of the thing was. I really haven't found a place for myself here and it's really wearing on me. I'm supposed to be a designer, but they have me slinging code all day. The Application is pretty neat, but it's not mine and I feel no ownership on it. I wish I could have been here from the conception stage. I personally feel it's ugly. it's overbearing and heavy. It looks like it was spawned in the 70's with it's puke yellow background and cloudy day blue and grey stripes in tables. Our UI guy wants every field's colour to mean something, but that a terrible way to approach something. It forces you to have a colour for everything. It also sort of reminds me of the colours they might use in an army field hospital. Yellow and tan cammo on the outside and soothing blue they use in police stations on the inside.
Questions are orange, blahs are red, tables are blue this is that. With all these colours being used it makes for a hideous mess. They all sort of go together, but really they can't... there's no way.
Today I resigned. I had an offer from a different company. They are giving me a design position. Something familiar. They aren't paying as much, and I'll have to relocate to my home town, but that's ok too, my ex girlfriend of 5 years lives there, and we are going to
give it another shot. If the only reason you break up is because you want to have fun in another city, than the only thing stopping us from having fun again is memories of Toronto.
joelf: you know, this all sounds really good. Way to go - you know yourself, you gave it a shot, you deserve to work where people have their act together. Good luck with the girl, too.
Way to be assertive and congrats on your new job! If the money's enough then it's worth it to do something you enjoy, and hopefully, in a better environment.
Hey, when do you get into town? Show for the Feb 4th Mefi/Mecha in Vancouver?
