Try newsstand/magazine stores in "arty/hip/gay" neighborhoods, independent bookstores, art museums. Much better calendars there, and since they're small businesses, they're desperate to get rid of the inventory for more floor space.
You're too late. They were marked half off in late December, and by now all that's left is the dregs, marked down to a buck or two, that the reseller hopes he/she can sell, rather than just trash.
The buying of the on sale calendar is a difficult and delicate matter which requires exquisite timing, like, January 4 is a good day, so you're probably too late but you never know. . . maybe you just didn't realize that German Shepherd Puppies or The Trees of Britain were you. Me, I got a free Scenic America one from my mechanic anyway this year plus a truly hideous dog one: cartoony drawings, not photos, it's up for grabs, pay shipping & it's yours.
A Mecha calendar sounds like a nice idea. Could it have quotes from characteristic posts from the persons depicted? I'd like it to be SFW though, so no naked body parts. And could it have the picture of JonMc with the giant can of beer?
I bought my Dilbert-a-day calendar on January 1 at 50% off. Why do people buy calendars before they go on sale? (Gifts, yeah, I guess - it was a rhetorical question - shut up.) It's madness!
The Fluffykittens calendar, listed in the Mefi Projects, is stunning and very close to free. You casn buy it for $19, or download it, modify it as you like, and print out your own.

oh yeah! i totally forgot about the train one. the pugs one was okay, but it just looked like the same dog over and over, and i don't think i could take each month literally looking like the next, even if figuratively they all do at this point.
