umm, so re: Don Mclean "On the Amazon" - is there some story or explanation behind that? that is one of the oddest things I have heard in quite a while (but I liked it)

You mean Don McLean wrote more than one song? You never would have learned that from "classic rock" radio.

The best story I have about the Don McLean song is this:

In my younger years, I had a friend, some of a mystically enthralled teacher/trickster, that played many fine songs on his guitar. He told me that aliens helped him "write" that song out in Reno, Nevada. Sure 'nuff, after he long since disappeared into the ethers, I googled a lyric fragment and there was Don McLean. Though, I would still like to believe the aliens helped him to stylize it.

Other than that, I know nothing of McLean's context, but the song is near-n-dear to my ticker.
