What do you think orthogonality looks like? I think he looks like Tom Selleck.
no way. He looks like Matthew Fox.

Leave ortho be. This is sorta out of line based on past events, eh?
posted by warbaby 17 January | 14:43
It's Ok, I think it's riffing on this comment of mine.

Just keep it light and it's ok by me.
posted by orthogonality 17 January | 14:46
Oh come on. Ortogonality is clearly Gary Busey.
posted by selfnoise 17 January | 14:48
I missed that comment and I just figured since you're a pretty mysterious guy the wondering was abounding.

And hey, at least I think you're hot, right?
posted by puke & cry 17 January | 14:49
Actually I didn't see that comment. I was just thinking over lunch that I imagine you with a Tom Selleck moustache.
posted by kenko 17 January | 14:49
For some reason I think ortho is young. Maybe a tad older than I? 22 or 23? And I imagine that he has red hair and a very sharp jawline. You should post a picture, except not of yourself, but rather someone else and claim that it's you. I'll believe it and then I can stop thinking about this.

Because he may or may not have created metafilthy or at least know the creator of metafilthy, he looks like God to me (only thinner).

Something Pablo Picasso painted.

I think he's in his mid to late 30s, or even a little older. Average-looking. He has dark hair that he kind of combs back, and dark-rimmed glasses. He's a little overweight, but not much. He has a friendly face but doesn't smile or talk much. Keeps to himself.

I think I just described a serial killer.

Picture a blond Tony Danza.

Janus, where do I get a copy of "How To Shave in Five Easy Steps, By Al Swearengen"?
posted by mudpuppie 17 January | 15:40
Pups, if that was actually Swearengen, the final step would be taking the razor to the throat of a Squarehead.

Like he smells menstrual blood.

You sure you aren't describing this guy?

dan, we were all having light-hearted fun. Please don't ruin it by trotting out your axe-grinding grudge.

I think ortho is skinny and dark-haired, but that's the only thing I'm picking up from the ether when I concentrate.

Ax-grinding grudge?

Easy there, tiger. I mean, I'm neither a stalker nor embroiled in a spat with you, but I toyed with the idea of responding "Multiple Miggs" myself. I kinda wish I had. It was funny.

I have a lotta respect for you both, enough to think you're both smart and cool enough to be able to ease off each other without poking or feeling poked, and to once again regard one another's words without raising up. This isn't meffy, after all. The pen isn't poisoned yet.

If you don't feel like it, though, don't. I hate unsolicited advice, too.

It the expression of orthogonality.

Early 20's, skinny, angular, dark hair, needs a haircut.
posted by matildaben 17 January | 18:57
I think he's the dog from that "On the internet nobody knows you're a dog" New Yorker cartoon. Not the one on the computer, the other one.
posted by Slack-a-gogo 17 January | 20:24
I think he looks like Vincent D'Onofrio. (I am not axe-grinding, or trying to be rude.)

Hint: there is a photo on Flickr, but it isn't on my Flickr.
posted by terrapin 18 January | 10:02
terrapin, it's been made clear to you -- by me and by several other people, on several occasions, in comments and by private email -- that I strongly value my privacy, and that your stalker-ish comments about me aren't appreciated.

So it must have occurred to you by now that pointing out where a photo of me can be found is unappreciated, rude and unfriendly.

And yet you do it.

Why is there a picture of you on Flickr then? Does the person refuse to take it off cause if they do, that sucks.

And it seems so strange that their is a conflict between ortho and SpoFi Mefites. What's with you SpoFi Mefites! Oh wait.
posted by panoptican 18 January | 11:33
Dan, what's your point?

I've consistently ignored your posts and comments -- I even desisted from a "[This is good]" in your Loopmanics post today, because I didn't want to risk it being taken the wrong way.

You promised to do the same:
I pledge to completely ignore [orthogonality] here -- and I hope to be reminded of my pledge should I fall off the wagon.

And yet you don't. How many times do you have to be reminded of your "pledge", dan?

Why must you and terrapin continue to stir things up?

Why must you keep bothering me and everyone else here with your private jihad?

Act your age, Dan. Just let it go.
posted by orthogonality 18 January | 11:49
My point is fairly obvious, I think: you've stated outright before that you don't care if the things you say are 'nice' or not, so saying terrapin's comment was rude is silly hypocrisy.

His comment wasn't particularly rude and neither was mine. (There's zero chance of finding your photo based on info provided.) But you chose to read them in the worst possble light and respond harshly. You're really doing the stirring here.

As far as my pledge, I dunno. You posted five threads yesterday, which is fine but hard to ignore. And (b) a reminder from you is pretty much meaningless to me.

You can act like everything I say to/about you is a grudge rooted in a single incident, but that doesn't make it true. Letting 'it' go does not mean I shouldn't respond in context when I wish.
posted by danostuporstar 18 January | 12:25
To be clear, orthogonality, I like you. 90% of your posts reflect intelligence and thoughtfulness and you are a source of information that I find interesting. I value that.
posted by danostuporstar 19 January | 09:11
I think that's a decent segue into a rapprochement, don't you ortho?

I like orthogonality, too - though I have to admit that I totally had him slotted in the "fucking jerk" column after a certain mefi thread. But reading one comment, or even a series of comments in one thread is not sufficient to read the soul of any poster. My impressions of Mefi and Mecha members are constantly shifting, and some people I didn't like before, I like very much now. And, occasionally, vice-versa.

A lot of you are really mad-quirky little bunnies. I know I am. I also know that I'm usually really, really bored with most typically "normal" people, so it almost always behooves me to stretch my idea of what I consider acceptable or non-acceptable behavior/positions/points of view, or at least to stretch my idea of what may be forgiven. Etc. If the main combatants in this thread could do a little of the same, it would be a good thing, because in my opinion, you all have much more in common than you realize, and more to learn from each other than you recognize.
