Seriously, can someone explain to me why the "I'm afraid I was very, very drunk" admission has been such a big fucking deal? It's not like he was using steroids.

Yeah -- much ado about nothing.

From what I have been hearing, folks were upset in that he is such a role model to young skiers and snowboarders -- and admitting he skis while 'wasted' got parents' and coaches' panties in a bunch.
