What is something super cool you've done recently? Obviously super-cool is in the mind of the beholder, but I just locked myself out of my lab and broke in with a bit of wire and a credit card. I'm feeling all MacGyverish.
Yesterday afternoon, I took my kid to a foofoo cafe for a surprise fancy cocoa with whipped cream and sprinkles, got her a library card of her very own, and took her to a video place and let her rent Ren and Stimpy for the first time. I don't know if anyone else considers that super-cool, but she certainly did. Oh, and I granted her request for a spaghetti dinner. It's the little things.

Oh that's cool. I would have loved to have been taken to a fancy cafe when I was little. And I can still remember getting my first library card. Yay!

I've been exceeding good at catching things before they hit the groud, toilet, wherever. It makes me feel like some sort of one-trick superhero. It's all about beating it to the spot instead of chasing it - a quick dash into the future. A couple of days ago I caught a lightbulb in the dark.

I used a home made spud gun (4' of ABS plastic tube, hairspray and lighter) to launch potatos into the Willammette river. Got off a couple shots over 400 feet.

and very cool, millie--my first library card (and my brothers') was a big deal too. : >

postmodernmillie that sounds like a sweet day!

I never do super cool stuff. Too much work. It's enough trouble doing ordinary things. And weird stuff will happen with no effort whatsoever, I've found.

Mmmmm...fancy cocoa. That's groovy, millie! And gaspode, that's impressive. I've got no MacGyver in me. Although I seem to be the only one who can fix our ride-on mower and I am the go-to when someone's toilet is malfunctioning (growing up in a house with one bathroom and 6 girls, it was a survival skill.)

I went into the subway station, but both cards (monthly and backup cash) came up insufficient fare. At this particular entry point, you can't buy metrocards and you can't jump the turnstiles. So, I went back out of the station, crossed the street and went down into the other entry point. Waited for some patrons to finish up at the one metrocard vending machine, then I rocked through the choices, got my card and receipt, exited, crossed the street again, and went back down into the first entry point, heard the approaching train, went through the turnstile, ran halfway down the platform area 'cause the G is half the normal length, and managed to hop in the last set of doors of the last car succesfully catching the train that was pulling in the station as I was going through the turnstile. (All despite a sports injury).

safetyfork, I felt the thrill and the glory. That's enough to put a wiggle in your walk for the rest of the day. Well done!

I'm saving my cool stuff for next week when I head to Australia to meet a friend... (SQUEE!!)

And this weekend we're taking a friend to Chuck E. Cheese's for her 26th (again) birthday!

Thank you, thank you!

It's a soccer injury and I'm seeing the doctor about it tomorrow morning.

pieisexactlythree, I used to love playing around with potato guns. My friends and I built a series of them, culminating in a version with an 8-foot barrel that was powered by a propane tank and primed with a curtain rod.

We never found the potatoes we shot from that one.

I helped a dude figure out how to make pdf's from MS Project and Visio when he was out of time on a deadline. And Millie sounds like a good mom. jonmc you make me laugh on a regular basis. That is super cool.

We spent a night and a bright winter morning in Butte, Montana, on our way back from the holidays in Spokane. We got off the interstate late at night and asked the gas station clerk if there was anywhere interesting, but not too expensive to stay. We were directed to the magnificent old Finlen Hotel, where we got a great 2 bedroom suite for $65! In the morning we explored the town a bit--Butte is way high in the Rockies, it once had a huge copper mining industry and over 100,000 people, now it is trying to come out of a 50+ year depression with a new economy based on tourism and Superfund. It was a fascinating and serendipitous stop for a history geek like myself.

I disassembled, fixed, and reassembled the space heater that is my best friend as I sit all day in front of Metachat in an unheated room. (It was all gudged up with cat hair, turned out.)

I have worked in my pajamas for two days straight, and my dinner last night consisted of wasabi peas and white wine while finishing a Margaret Atwood novel.

I feel like I'm hosting a one-woman multi-day slumber party, and it makes me enormously happy.

Oh! Also! It was my late mother's birthday yesterday, and I was feeling slightly burnt-out and unimaginative and therefore bummed that I wasn't doing something in her memory (other than just remembering her, which is also important).

But!

It turns out I spent Saturday at her favorite beach in the world, in Big Sur. I hadn't even realized that she and my father made it out there a few years ago, let alone that they had visited this particular beach or liked it so much. So finding that out was super-cool.

I made a really good pot of soup last night. Today I finished knitting the scarf I was making for my older brother's birthday (which is today) so I wrapped it up all pretty and took it and some soup over to my moms (which is where my brother lives when he's not at sea.)He's having dental surgery tomorrow so he'll need soup. I feel like a good sister & daughter; also, I cleaned the living room, took down the Christmas stuff yesterday, washed the dishes, and managed to stay away from the computer until now.
