sony reader we wantss thisss. now. (but only if it can read pdf, anyway)
But Sony? Won't it automatically install some awful DRM system to your eyes?

i know...but it's like print! That's a harsh trade-off.

It might. I mistakenly bought a Sony pr0n DVD last year. I haven't been able to reproduce ever since.

Very neat tech. I bet it doesn't smell like a book, though.

Having just spent my evening trying unsuccessfully to get PDFs to display on my PDA, I wholeheartedly agree.

Oh my god. If it isn't totally DRM'd to hell and beyond, I am going to buy this for myself as some sort of congratulatory gift for some sort of invented occasion.

Are you sure you WANT it to smell like a book?

It does indeed look like really cool hardware!

But knowing Sony, it will be crippled with some of the most brain-dead, most user-hostile, most all-around-shit DRM this side of Pluto.

*sigh*

I would love to have one of these and "iTomes" for my Mac. If I could download ebooks for cheap and read them on a device like this, I'd be quite thrilled. Of course, it would absolutely have to accept my own PDFs and whatnot, and the DRM would have to be no worse than that of the iTunes store.

Which means I still be waiting.

Here's an updated hands-on from Gizmodo. Native PDA support, supports RSS with images. Sony promises no restrictions on moving documents over.

I miss reading books on my Palm pilot. It was a lot of fun to be able to just lay down, prop it up and have it autoscroll text for me while I read and read until I was just chock full.

I do want an e-Ink textreader, but not at 300-400+ bucks. It doesn't have to have a backlight. I can rig up an LED or two on a wired stalk, and I won't have to worry about the turning pages hitting the light like a lot of booklights have a problem with. (I currently use a headlamp for night reading.)

i think i'll wait for a roll-up (or foldaway) piece of plastic that will wirelessly feed whatever i want onto it whenever i want it.
