on the 1-train interrupted a conversation my friend and I were having about Christmas plans to stare me down and tell me that she didn't appreciate violent talk on the subway.

"Everybody comes on here and talks about violent things, people... hitting other people. I was hit in the head by a seven-foot tall man on the subway, and it's really dangerous, this violent talk. Men think they can just hit women, it's terrible, a terrible problem, violence against women, he hit me in the head, the seven-foot tall man, it can be very dangerous. Women aren't safe..."

She went on in a loop for a few minutes, until I gently interrupted her, and said "You're right. I agree with every word you just said. Thank you."

She gaped at me for a minute and then shuffled off to mutter at her hands.
