18 December 2005

Don't turn around (uh-oh!) dar Kommisar's in town Yes, we're (hopefully) debuting Radio YHBC (bam!!!) in just a few minutes - something old, something new, and even some a cappella too ...
Thanks to Eideteker for the gracious lead-in announcement, and the excellent tunage earlier in the evening - I'll just clean out the chip bags, Dr. Pepper bottles, and, um - and whatever that is - and adjust the seat (damn, he's a short little fella!) and we'll see if we can get this thing runinng in just a few minutes!

And we're off!
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:21
Only the best for my colleagues. As long as I know someone's coming up, I'll always try to announce it.
posted by Eideteker 18 December | 22:21
So far we've heard the db's, singing about a woman who left him an amplifier, The Stranglers, singing about the Peaches on the Beaches, and now here comes that first a cappella song I warned you about -
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:27
I'm singing along with Tom Lehrer... :-D
posted by wendell 18 December | 22:32
Are you going to come join us on IRC, yhbc?
posted by matildaben 18 December | 22:32
Hey, I can only keep so many windows open! The hampsters are hungry, and they might go on strike at any time!
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:33
Two songs about death (the 6ths, the Dead Only Quickly Decay, and Tom Lehrer's homage to the Bomb That Gets Us All), and now one of the saddest songs I know - Manu Chao's tale of a little monkey who was the king of the bongo.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:39
Nice stuff. I was telling the folks on IRC how my dad turned me on to Tom Lehrer but I haven't really listened to him since I was 16. I should remedy that.
posted by matildaben 18 December | 22:40
Leading right into the Dresden Dolls. They are great live. Cabaret is not dead, at least in Massachusetts.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:40
So I just tune in and what do I get? Dresden Dolls. Yay!
posted by LeeJay 18 December | 22:41
Two points to whoever can first I.D. this next band.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:44
More a cappella next - it's another cover song, by possibly the best a cappella group ever.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:46
Uhh... It says the Rutles in WinAMP. What can I use my points on?
posted by Eideteker 18 December | 22:47
Cheese and Onions!
posted by matildaben 18 December | 22:48
Okay, I forgot the playlist is automatic, too. Your points are redeemable at any of our convenient outlets. See the brochure for details. Some restrictions may apply.

These guys should do the Bob Dylan version.

One of the highlights of my (first) college career was auditioning for an a capella group with Jimi Hendrix's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
posted by Eideteker 18 December | 22:51
That was the Bobs doing Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", and now we've got the classic doo-wop of the Robins' "Smokey Joe's Cafe". Next up, some more a cappella, this time, not a cover song.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 22:53
That was Throat Culture, singing about the love for a Fonemate, and up now is the immortal M, doing the theme song to Les Triplets de Belleview (however it's spelled). Next up - a set of Boston-area 80's rock. Go, Celtics!
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:00
We had Our Daughter's Wedding, synthesizing about Lawnchairs; Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, only Hurting a Little While; and the Neats, doing 6. That's it, just 6. Then, Devo showed us all how Head Like A Hole should have been done in the first place.

Now, Fred Schneider (the B-52's, remember?) is singing about the Monster in his Pants, and next up is another a cappella song on the same topic (I couldn't resist!)
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:19
Oh, if anyone would like that Devo cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole", it's here for a limited time only. Coupons accepted. Tip your waitress.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:26
After a Tones on Tail classic, we heard John Otway's "Head Butts"; now, a real British classic from BAD.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:30
I thought they were now known as BAND: Big Audio Napoleon Dynamite.
(sorry.)
posted by wendell 18 December | 23:35
Ouch. Anyway, that was Big Audio Dynamite with "Union, Jack", followed by Liam Lynch and "MY United States of America!". Now, it's back to the future again, with Sister Nancy and "Bam, Bam!"
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:40
Followed immediately by another oldie, Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites"
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:41
"My United States of Whatever"... is that a cover version of the John Scalzi blog?
(sorry again. very strange mood. explain later.)
posted by wendell 18 December | 23:42
I think you really need to YSI My United States of Whatever. Pretty please? Also, great stuff yhbc. I'm loving it.
posted by panoptican 18 December | 23:46
Okay, now playing is a song I thought I deleted from the playlist; Nada Surf doing "If You Leave". The song that got accidentally deleted instead, you'll just have to wait to hear another day. Sorry, but that's the way it works. Hey, you, didn't pay much for this shit, after all.
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:46
Okay, here's Liam Lynch doing My United States of Whatever.

Meanwhile, now playing is the song that I thought got accidently deleted, the Slits' "Typical Girls".
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:50
Some more Nada Surf covers for the chatters.
posted by matildaben 18 December | 23:54
Thanks. I eagerly await yhbc's as well.
posted by Eideteker 18 December | 23:55
And the Nada Surf cover I did of "If You Leave"
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:56
Quick enough?
posted by yhbc 18 December | 23:57
We're wrapping up shortly - only two more to go, after Cheech & Chong's "Basketball Jones", now it's the Fall, and "Hit the North!"
posted by yhbc 19 December | 00:00
