It may look like the bike was going fast, but count the time from when the car edged over into the oncoming lane and the impact.
Folks, if you drive, please please please be aware when you do so. Left-turn collisions are the primary killer of motorcyclists every year. Not speed. Make sure you, your friends, and your family are using turn signals, and make sure you look twice for the bike. I don't want to hear "I didn't see you!" when you come to see me in the hospital.
That said, it's every biker's responsibility to minimize the chance of an accident. You are the one to get hurt, even if it's someone else's "fault." Think 12 seconds ahead, keep your speed nominal, especially around places where people pull in and out, and practice quick stops and swerving!
Eideteker, I agree 100% except I still think the biker was going too fast. I ride, too, and I've nearly been killed in this manner so many times it's frightening. I've locked up the rear wheel and skidded sideways toward a pickup truck doing exactly this, and just barely squeezed around him without falling. Even doing 35-45mph, in accordance with the flow of traffic, people making these left turns can be deadly.
deborah, my thoughts exactly. Those people were totally useless.
