Pencil or pen? I just noticed that I'm using the venerated Dixon Ticonderoga; quite accidentally, of course. What's your writing implement of choice?
Pen, pen, pen. Pencils are so white trash.

Only joking, of course!

Pen.

My computer. I write like a four-year-old.

Uniball Vision fine point. Pen.

Pen. I don't like the texture of pencils when writing.

Uniball Vision Exact, to be precise (hyuk hyuk). Though that's only while I search for the refills I bought for my fountain pen.
posted by Eideteker 13 December | 16:54
Also, I'm a lefty, so pencils are generally Right Out.

Pilot Precise V5. My favorite rollerball. I never have enough.

Pen, pencil, marker, rustoleum, krylon, Sakura flow marker, sandpaper glued to the base of a little wooden dowl, stylus and wax tablet, doodoo on the wall, as long as it's never a mechanical pencil, blurrrggggg!

Although goatdog has the final answer. If I even have a handwriting anymore, I'm not sure I would recognize it.

I'm a compulsive clicker. No one can read my handwriting though so I'm not sure why I even try.

whatever random pen I've picked up from a trade show.

Pilot V5s and V7s. And plastic Bic mechanical pencils by the box.
posted by carter 13 December | 17:12
Although I do keep pencils around for twirling. They have ideal weight and length for such endevours. I kept a pencil twirling on my thumb once for twenty minutes.

Fountain pen. Sharp pencil. Today? Blood.

I'm a blue felt-tip girl.

And ballpoints? Hate 'em.
posted by mudpuppie 13 December | 17:33
For those instances where I have no choice but to write (signing confessions, autographs, etc.), I buy Pilot Precise V5s by the box.

Uniball!

Waterman Phileas Fountain Pen. One of these days when I have tons of money I'll buy a Waterman Serenite [$600].
posted by sciurus 13 December | 17:52
I'm with mudpuppie. Ballpoints suck. Felt tips are good, especially pentel sign pens, and pencils are good, preferably HB or softer. American Naturals!

I use quill pens and ink, or black colored pencils. You can't get much line variance out of a Bic.
posted by interrobang 13 December | 18:35
Uniball Vision Micro (I like the old version, but they've become hard to fine.)

Zebra M402 mechanical pencil. Excellent weight/balance, solid construction.
posted by porpoise 13 December | 18:37
I just want one of those spacepens that write upside down... I'm always doing crossword puzzles in bed, which, while I'm cycling through near-sleep positions, often makes my pen go no-writey.

Blood. Preferably that of virgins.

Mongol pencils, gel pens, and morse code ground out by my molars as I sleep.

But jonmc - do you use your fingers, a fountain pen, or a quill from a raven?
posted by porpoise 13 December | 19:30
I think the implication was he uses his dick.

telekenesis, porpoise, telekenesis.

which reminds me of this story from back in the day:

I was having a major caffeine jones on the way home from work, so I decided to break with the usual policy and pulled into a Starbucks. I perused the menuboard and saw a small placard below the drinks reading "ADD POWER 50 cents" This was promising. My turn in line came up.

"I'd like a venti Caramel Frappuccino," I said "with telekinesis."

"With what, sir?"

"You know, the power to move objects with my mind," I pointed at the sign, "I always wanted that."

"Oh," the barrista said "It's not that kind of power, sir."

Ah, so it was a coffee-based beverage of a more Machiavellian bent I was purchasing here.

"All right, then I'd like to be ruler of Maine" I said.

"Maine?"

"The state. It's really nice up there and if I'm going to weild power, that's the place I'd like to do it."

"Um, it's not that kind of power either, sir. How about I just give you some with your drink and you'll see."

Well, I'm here to tell ya, it just tasted like an ordinary Frappuccino to me, but all you chicks better watch out, power being the ultimate aphrodisiac and all.

eideteker, you are one sick bastard.

I like that about you.

Pen - preferably gel or felt tip. I'm another ball point hater. Pencils are okay for taking notes as long as it's a mechanical. I hate regular pencils - they get dull too fast.
posted by deborah 13 December | 20:58
Pencils never leak in my pockets. .5mm bics by the boatload.

Berol Black Warriors are vengeful gods among pencils.
posted by killdevil 13 December | 21:40
For just basic writing, I usually use a Bic pen. I have refillables and such, but it's hard to keep track of one that you like and have it always available, whereas I can buy Bics by the barrel. I'll also use pencils for drawing-type tasks, but it has to have a fresh eraser -- the dried-out-eraser scrape sound is like fingernails on blackboard, to me.

For other tasks I'll use a felt-tip, a calligraphic pen, a Sharpie, a highlighter, etc. as appropriate.

Dell QuietKey. But I have a fetish about the cedar smell of a freshly sharpened #2 Di-Ti. Smells like... victory.

A standardized-test based education will do that to you.

Pilot Precise Rolling Ball, Extra Fine, 0.5 mm tip.

Pilot SCA-UF, as immortalized on the very late and very lamented smug.com.

My favorite is a black Papermate Flair - basically a felt-tip. Their design hasn't changed since the seventies so they have, for me anyway, a slightly retro feel to them. But I prefer felt-tips for two reasons - you can draw with them easier than with biros and they never seem to dry out in the same annoying way (a total irritant when you have an idea you need to get down NOW!).

Pen. Preferably rolling ball or gel. My favorites are the Uni-Ball Roller and Pilot G-2.

I do use a pencil to do Sudoku, though.
