Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child [More:]Not really but its a fantastic line to a fantastic song and I've been curious as to what songs other MeCha folks just adore. This song by Portishead and Tom Jones gives me chills if I crank it up and allow the music to take over the room.

Anyone care to share those tunes that have been with you for a long time that just resonate?

And yes, this was initiated by the thread the other day comparing Tom Jones to Noel Gallagher.
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, out of control

I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied

"For a Short Time", the live version by Weddings, Parties, Anything. On its own, it's a real sad song. But since a friend who hated being in pictures whenever we got together died this past September, this song rarely makes me feel happy listening to it.

And as long as we're doing the "dead friends" song tour, I also offer up "Strange Old Situation" by Travis Parker, a guy I met in college, went out on a few dates with, then found out he was murdered in August 2004. (Just checked and the guy who killed him was convicted. In less than an hour. Fuck yeah.) Anyway, since I actually know what some of the lyrics mean since he told me, it's real disconcerting for me to listen to this from time to time, too.

Wow, TrishaLynn, those're some sad stories! Sorry to hear it.

Frisbee Girl: Thanks. Why is it that good music can be linked to shitty situations?

I dunno, I think it's a combination of the power of emotion and the catharsis that can be communicated and experienced through music. Music being both universal & primal, then magnified by our need to not only share our sorrows and joys, but also to find some semblance of resolution and peace about the weirdo, crazy and fucked up stuff that life regularly hands us on a plate creates a medium that, in some ways, seems as though it should be too oxymoronic to exist but somehow makes perfect sense.

[Poorly constructed sentence, but my two cents, nonetheless.]

TrishaLynn, wow, that must have been a pretty rough patch for you. I'm sorry to hear it.

Fenriq: Yeah, it was interesting, to say the very least. Now, my life is divided into "Before [X-person] died" and "After [X-person] died."

I'm not looking forward to the mess I will become after my parents die.
