History of 'The Producers': Part III During an early staging of The Producers, “a Jewish guy got up and stormed out of the theater. He saw me standing at the back with my wife. He said, ‘This is an outrage! I fought in the Second World War!’ I said, ‘You served in the war?’ ”—and here he stops, takes a beat, then pounces on his punch line—“ ‘So did I. I didn’t see you there.’”
Parsing the nested quotation marks carefully is important.

Perplexing lack of payoff on the Broderick/ass-pinching incident, but yes, it was interesting. Also a writer who knew their history of the subject might have tied back Brooks' singing and dancing pitch to the play's producers to his original pitch for the original movie, which is reputed to have consisted of him acting out the entire story right there in the office.
