Indie thrash industrial metal hardcore [More:] or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

I wanna get my nephew some cool tunes this Christmas but I'm not sure where to start. His favorite band right now is Seether, after that possibly Rob Zombie. We mutually like Nine Inch Nails, and he enjoyed the White Stripes concert ("but he didn't play the rat song!"), and he listens to a lot of hip-hop as well. I'm hoping to get him something he'll like, while expanding his horizons a little.

So far System of a Down seems like the "smartest" bet. I'm thinking maybe something like Death From Above 1979 is the closest to what I have in mind, but maybe too far. Perhaps Madvillain would be appealing to him, too?

Ideas, O MeCha!
What about Dangerdoom, which is Dangermouse (grey album fame) and MF Doom and it's all sort of diagonally related to Adult Swim on the cartoon network (space ghost, the one with the fast food dudes). It's very good and slightly less opaque than the other MF Doom efforts. Me, I adore the metal face but I don't know if madvillain isn't a bit inward and obscure for a nephew. Dangerdoom is wonderful and smart teenage boy friendly.

Now when you say Hardcore, do you mean new stuff? 'Cause I don't now shite about that. Can I ask how old neph is?

I'm old, so I like Ministry and Skinny Puppy. Pigface. I do like System of a Down, but they're so popular now that there's a backlash. Oh, check out Ethyl Meatplow. Not exactly industrial or hardcore, but still cool. Of course I really like(d) Kittie because how could you not find a 16 year old hardcore girl band not the coolest thing evar? Old Rollins? I have to admit I like Rammstein. Tool? How about Fishbone's classic album "The Reality of my Surroundins"? Some hardcore related bands that I bought but didn't like that much but are okay are: Deadlights, Disturbed (before they showed up on the radio), Primer 55 (I do like them).

Seether and Rob Zombie, hmmm......maybe give SCUM a shot? Personally I couldn't make it halfway through the mp3 I sampled but YMMV. (I listened to it b/c it was likened to the Hellacopters* -- which I can enjoy). Although this scum protest life video has put a smile on my face and left me giggling.

Actually, in all seriousness if he doesn't already have Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come -- that's a great album. It's an excellent blend of stuff (i.e. many genres from your title) he'll probably eat up. Handy Links: 1 / 2.

*Not to be confused with the party of Hellacopters.

On preview: my bandmates and I were just pining over land of rape and honey last night! Stigmata's an excellent, excellent song. I never was a skinny pup fan, though.

Pigface, yes. Tool, christ yes. Einsturzende Neubaten. Skinny Puppy, fer fuck's sake.

Not to be confused because it's spelled differently: Helicopters. I thought I fixed that. Too much going on in my comment I guess. Also, it's probably not explicitly "dark" enough in image for him, but Hot Snakes' Audit in Progress is great. Ohhh.....I just thought of another good one: 400 Blows' Black Rainbow or Angel's Trumpets Devil's Trombones. I prefer the songs off of Black Rainbow* but the production is a bit sharper on Angel's Trumpets is a bit sharper which helps some since they're a bassplayer-less band.

Too young for Big Black? SAF is a hoot.

*Root of Our Nature sold me, and came this close ' ' to being on my cmonkey's swap mix.

But obviously, I'm duller....or way too excited (way too excited). OK, Got to go! (go). ...planning on going solo?

Meshuggah is pretty high-quality stuff and is at least comparable to SOAD as far as smarts.

Fear Factory is another pretty good bet - Soul of a New Machine and Demanufacture were great, groundbreaking albums; last year's Archetype was excellent, too. The first three tracks on Demanufacture were like a manifesto when that album came out, and they'll still rip your face off.

But do me a favor and take a chance on Death's swan song, Sound of Perseverance. It's not industrial or hip-hoppy but it's in the same category for aggression, dense texture, and harsh timbre, and the level of composition is otherworldly. It might click, it might not, but if it does it would definitely be horizon-expanding.

I can bring some mp3s this evening if you'd like.

I'm not up on new stuff, but I definitely second Refused. They're very very good.

See, I'm totally lost already ...

The kid's 17 (today, actually) but behind his peers. He doesn't have any friends that an 80s/90s historical example would impress even though he might like them himself, so I was thinking current stuff and should have said.

Running MP3s by me is pretty useless, beyond the poppier elements of SOAD and the sorta post-rock Tool sound I'm just turned off -- I know Skinny Puppy and Ministry but don't "get" it, you see.

I'm leaning toward Dangerdoom as the best of the lot for what I have in mind, but keep the suggestions coming! Everybody's being very helpful in describing stuff.

Meshuggah and FF both have current releases that I think would be very much what you're looking for. Take the pulse on Meshuggah over at Amazon. Which reminds me, Dillinger Escape Plan is another good 'un.

But, asking respectfully, you're hoping to (maybe) expand his horizons while limiting yourself to safe bets that his friends will like?

If he finds something he likes, even though his friends aren't impressed, so much the better - that's what makes him him.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time; just had to say that.

buy the little fuck some lawrence welk. and tell him to stay off my damn lawn.

*shakes fist*

I'll second Fear Factory.
High on Fire might be a hit. Their influences run deep, from death metal to Motorhead, and their pretty melodic.
And I'll just mention a favorite of mine, although it's a decade old - At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul.

hellbient, I saw AtG touring for Slaughter of the Soul on my birthday, and that was the best birthday ever.

Wolfdog, I just don't want to come off like some music-history didact. "You must know this Important Band before you may progress in life." (Lord knows people have been telling me to listent to Fugazi for years.) Current, possibly, just because there might be a video, not to impress his friends.

Ah, what do I need to worry, the kid worships the ground I walk on. ;-)

Ah, that's cool.

Here. I have no idea what this is; I call it weird German death metal. There's a whole bunch of it on the computer, courtesy my son, so I selected a random track, if you want I'll put the whole thing on a CD & mail it to you. Bonus points to whoever can tell me what the hell it is.

That's Rammstein.
posted by kmellis 30 November | 19:28
Specifically, it's "Sonne" from the album "Mutter".
posted by kmellis 30 November | 19:30
Cool. I have the whole album, if anyone wants a copy. Thanks kmellis! Now I can label it.

Toxicity by System of a Down is great. You might try Powerman 5000 which is Rob Zombie's little brother, I hear the new Slipknot is pretty good as well.

Leaning away from the metal but still rocking, I'd suggest Eagles of Death Metal.

Hier kommt die Sonne!

I love me some Rammstein. Lucky you, MGL!

What about those clean-cut looking boys who teamed up with Jay-Z at one stage. Linkin Park maybe? The guy who does the screaming in that band has a fine pair of lungs. At the risk of outing myself as some kind of music dork, I have to say I quite enjoyed that stuff.
posted by nomis 30 November | 19:46
Yeah, Toxicity is better than their latest offering. But be aware that SoaD is all over the local Clear Channel-owned "new rock" station.
posted by kmellis 30 November | 19:46
...and so is Slipknot.

Killswitch Engage.

For the more metalish stuff, I'd second High on Fire's Blessed Black Wings. You know, if he doesn't have Mastodon's Leviathan album that's another good one IMO.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out. I think I might even explore some of these suggestions (there's a number of them I've never given a chance).

Heh. But I outgrew that stuff years ago, how can I stay current?

If you're going Ministry, go for Psalm 69. It'll impress his friends.

Aside from that, you can tell him that Noise is where all the cool kids go after they get done with industrial.
Bands to check out: Lightning Bolt. Their Wonderful Rainbow album is so fucking awesome that he'll be blown away by the sheer waves of it.
Black Dice are good and kind of orchestral noise (despite being a duo).
Forcefield is insane, as is anything on Load records out of Providence.

For old school, give him a Nailbomb CD. Or Napalm Death. Napalm Death, if played loud enough, can actually strip paint from walls. There's also Burzum, if you don't mind supporting a murdering white supremacist.

On the metal tip, Mastadon is fucking killer. As are Orange Goblin, Lanternjack, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Fucking Champs (which you'll have to give on the sly), The Eagles of Death Metal, and Crush Kill Destroy.

You can also go a bit oldschool and get him a Prong album or Screw. Or Corrosion of Conformity. Sepultura's Chaos AD also belongs in everyone's cd collection, along with maybe Roots.

The good thing about Lightning Bolt and Black Dice is that they are also quite young, so it's a nice take on Ruins, which you should get him if the former are hits. And don't forget the glorious Breadwinner.

Also, Angelblood is a really strange band, kind of a mix of Current 93 and black metal. Sweet stuff, although might not be exactly the thing though.

And the Burzum story alone will probably intrigue him. I recommend Filosofem. Plenty of mp3s here. Darkthrone might be a better black metal pick though, as they still exist.

Oh, it's so ancient history, but Godflesh's Streetcleaner is really a perfect blend of industrial and metal. Which forces me to mention Young Gods and Swans. Okay, i stop now.

Klang, I saw Napalm Death a month or two ago. Awesome show.

The fucking champs!

They're like metal buillion cubes. Love em!

Right on with Chaos AD klangklangston. Also, if you do end up going old school, Nuclear Assault are great.
