Let's do something stupid! [More:]
Or in case you don't want to do something stupid, does someone care to stand tall before the man and admit that it was fucked up that you didn't tell me how good and weird Antony and the Johnsons is?

Or if you don't want to do that, do you want to agree with me that "Walk the Line" was kinda mediocre as a movie, but the performances by the two main characters were flat out amazing?

Hi Metachat, I've been away and now I'm back again, the old travelin' wino. I hope you all are well or well enough.

I am going to change the lightbulbs in the office today, 14 feet off the ground, death defiance, ricketyness, swears.

Welcome back, Wino! How about I run with some scissors?

who the hell are Antony and the Johnsons?
posted by jonmc 28 November | 12:20
A band that did not exist before 1974, jonmc.. so nevermind.

Stupid?

I'm posting in Metatalk. Yup, on THAT thread.

jon

You might hate them for their trappings, but dude sounds like, to me, some wacked out inverted guy version of Nina Simone, I've been taking them in small doses for the last week and I've been satisfied. What's weird is I hate musicals and cabaret stuff, but this somehow makes me understand what might be good about stuff like that, if you approach it from the right messed up angle.

My girl, however, when I played it for her said:

"What the fuck is this, meatloaf having sex with Nick Cave? Put on some fucking rock now or I'll crash the car."

So there is that too.

I'll try to dig up the one song I'm really bugging about.

drpynchon:

My man jonboy does like music recorded after '74 but you have to be able to fuck in a van to it. Little known fact. Mind your business.

If you didn't know until now, DW, maybe you should put a nickel in a light socket. John, you can hold the metal ladder for not asking Mr. Google about the secret love child of Tiny Tim and Klaus Nomi.

Yeah, I'm the one who hates everything after '74.

I just go around in loops about things, like last week I said, I am going to open my mind to one new type of music, which was that antony and the johnsons stuff and some other thick glasses and sweaters nonsense. I also got about four motorhead albums so by the middle of the week I'll be on that.

that's a dude?

Did you listen or just dig the emo phillips bob?

posted by Divine_Wino 28 November | 12:37
I just looked at the picture. I don't get musically adventurous before lunch.

Which thread bunny? There's a bunch of stupid stuff going on..

the religion one? I just read that. Blah. same old same old.

Anthony and the Johnsons: see also this thread. (via Dodgy's new search function). Way better search, too btw. Thanks to tha geeza. Yeah. I'm still liking the A+J bird album, but we haven't got any more since.

14ft high (and rising?), that ain't nothing, why back in my day we used to get...be safe.
posted by safetyfork 28 November | 13:24
I didn't even bother reading that.

Of course, now I've gone and read the second half of the thread. Ugh.

Is there any discussion topic that Mefi is good at?

I no longer engage in religious threads. I might post in them, but I don't engage.

Before I begin, let me state for the record that the following is intended without snark of any sort. I'm just waking up and I'm afraid I might not phrase this in the best way possible. Please don't take any of this amiss.

OK?

So, would somebody be good enough to explain to me the appeal of the whole Freak Folk thing? Because I have tried and tried to see what the draw is, and it's eluding me. Anthony sounds, forgive me, like a tired old queen; Devendra Banhart comes off as an insufferable prick; the sheer awfulness of CocoRosie, to my ears, beggars description. And yet, I keep seeing these same people showing up in "best of 2005" lists all over the place. People whose tastes I otherwise trust are singing the praises of what sounds to me like lugubrious, utterly sexless music.

Again, I'm not trying to cast aspersions on anyone's taste. This is an earnest attempt to understand. Can you break it down for an old fart?

break it down...

HAMMER TIME!!!!

Well, I like tired old queens*. I can't explain the rest, except to say there is no accounting for taste. I've found songs I like from Devendra (who does seem like a prick, but that's cool too) and CocoRosie, I've also found a bunch (maybe the bulk) that I don't care for at all.

It's happened to me before, bmarkey, the whole "what, what the fuck? This is a joke right?" feeling, I try to lean into it a little and enjoy it.

*Sometimes I find one or two aspects of a certain musician that I like enough to get me past the things that I don't. The whole mp3, internet thing has made it a lot easier for me to just pick and choose the the tidbits that I enjoy, without ever having to say "you know, I'm really into freak folk" or something equally hideous, scenesterish or self-ghettoizing. Subculture is all about being in a gang. I am already in a gang, well really a defunct college softball team/music nerd club/substance abuse clique/cooking club/mutual aid society so I just roll with them.

Oh yeah, I've experienced it before, too. Usually I can sorta mentally squint and see what the deal is, but so far I haven't been able to make the jump. Not a huge thing, but I do like to try to understand things I don't completely get. Thanks for taking the question in the spirit in which it was intended.

That's a really good point. I can pick and choose what I like without having to get wholly into a scene. My tastes are all over the map some days and I like that.

I would like to confess to the following recent really stupid things:

I watched Ocean's 12 on DVD.
I purchased Revenge of the Sith.
I got Anthony & the Johnson's on CD because the TV said it was cool.
I thought it'd be easy to lay a patio in my front garden.
I bought a celebrity lunchbox on eBay because I was drunk.

posted by seanyboy 28 November | 16:51
Wait a minute.

What celebrity?
posted by Specklet 28 November | 17:08
My personal stupidity was to drunkenly agree to watch a portion of "A Very Brady Christmas" this weekend. It made me feel terrible. The only positive aspects were that I saw a brilliant argument for world socialism in the way the Bradys treated Alice and that Greg looked like a young Saddam Hussein with his nasty mustache.

For jonmc, Antony and the Johnsons makes the Smiths sound like the Who.

I think the word celebrity may be a bit strong.

I'm currently in love with Antony, actually. Have you heard his collaboration with CocoRosie on "Beautiful Boys"? It has been stuck in my head for weeks.
