25 November 2005

I'm sore and sad... I just had emergency surgery 2 nights ago and i'm feeling sad coz i lost a fallopian tube. I was discharged from the hospital this afternoon, so no turkey for me, and no Black friday shopping madness for me either. I'm very depressed...especially about the shopping. Please please suggest ways to beat this depressive funk i'm in...music, books (i can order online)websites to make me smile...etc etc.
Thanks, metachatters.
ramix, I'm so sorry. Truly.

Do you like David Sedaris? I've read a couple of his books before and found them funny, but after hearing him in person I bought an audiobook of Me Talk Pretty One Day for my long holiday weekend drive. It had me laughing out loud, often. Although maybe I shouldn't recommend something that might make you laugh too hard so soon after emergency surgery, I've been in a bit of a funk myself and it really cheered me.

I hope you feel better soon.

sorry, hon...i'm home sick too, if it helps at all. check my blogroll post right below, and this is funny, too.

and here's a song that cheers me up lately-fab cushion--Martinibomb--fun nonsense (and check out cliptip -- all sorts of interesting videos to watch)

I recommend Black cat white cat, it's one of the funniest movies I've seen, and i hope you'll feel better.

"when he calls me kitten--"
i may link it later
and may even buck up the cost of a recording and a few pics of glowing tubes for you
if it would really help

I suggest massive quantities of the sweet of your choice and perhaps a wine of your taste. Also, that song, "Love is All", that bdave posted earlier is a real good pick-me-up.

I sincerely hope you feel better soon.

maybe you did this before somewhere, but if you'd like to get specific about what you'd like to shop for (online or in a less mobile manner), i may not only be able to help, but get you good deals.
delectables? sundries? oddities? eventies?

This is the most entertaining thing I've seen lately.

besides the hilarious reaction at the dinner table once it was realized that my mother had forgotten to add sugar to the pumpkin pie, that is

Check out the suggestions in this pamphlet on critical incident stress.

I prepared it for community public health outreach and it has been used for several years by incident responders. The suggestions are actually good for any old time, but they are important when you are under stress because you forget to do these things due to the distraction.

Oh, poor ramix! (And I was whining because I had to spend Thanksgiiving cleaning house!)

If I were you, I guess I'd play one of those nice, long, difficult-but-pretty adventure games of the Myst genre. I used to get lost in those for hours untold, but don't ever seem to find the time to play any more.

I hope you feel better soon!

My heart goes out to you.

Fix yourself up with a big duvet, some soppy films, plenty of kleenex and chocolate, and wallow in sadness for two days.

Finish off with "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".
Because it will cheer you up.

On books. I'd go for something heavy and fantastical. A no brainer fantasy series is perfect for those times when your mind is wandering and it doesn't matter if you miss a couple of pages because you're mentally somewhere else.

Oh ramix, I’m so sorry.

I don’t really know your tastes, aside from James Brown… You probably already have this, but just in case – Get On The Good Foot.

When I’m feeling poorly, I know having some good food always seems to help a little. Treat yourself to something you really like but don’t always indulge in.

I don’t know if laughter would interfere with your stitches & whatnot. If you’re up to it, I’ve found silent comedy to be very good medicine – Buster Keaton (“The General” and “Our Hospitality” are two favorites, although you really can’t go wrong here) and Laurel & Hardy (“The Music Box” in particular) are both top notch. If the silents don’t work for you, it’s time for “Duck Soup” by the Marx Brothers. I’ve probably seen this film 50+ times and I still find it hilarious.

Not sure if any of this is helpful, but I send it with my best wishes to you.

I'm so sorry to hear it, ramix. I'll second the recommendation for Duck Soup. Hilarious and guaranteed to cheer. :) Feel better soon!

ramix, I sincerely hope you feel well soon, both physically and emotionally.

I just watched The Lady Eve and I highly recommend it; if you've never seen it, you will find it hard to believe just how sexy and funny Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda can be.

We've been catsitting for friends who have the first season DVD of Dead Like Me, and it's amusing -- so, if you'd like to get caught up in a serial, that might be a good bet. If you've never seen it, always plug Freaks and Geeks as one of my favorite (and too short-lived) shows ever.

If you didn't see the meta/mecha link, Yacht Rock is the first thing in a long time to make me laugh nonstop -- it's much more surreal than the other things I'm recommending, and unless you were traumatized by smooth rock in the 80s you might not find it so hilarious. But I sure do.

I hope you find something in all the lists you've got now to make you smile again. Take care!

Ohhhh Freaks and Geeks, Yesssss! Also, The Office. Mr. Gravy and I are thinking it is about time for our third viewing.

And Thanksgiving? Even though I love to cook, it is the one holiday I could really do without. Everyone stuffs themselves senseless and then flop down into a stupor. A living room full of comatose in-laws discussing in great detail the merits of the pie selection available just doesn't fulfill my festivity requirements.

I'm very glad I didn't have surgery, but honestly I would have preferred to make a nest on the couch, watching old movies and reading silly stuff while snaking on little tidbits. My guess is that there are many people in these United States who would have preferred that option to Holiday Hell.

My god. I am unintelligible today. Snaking? Really?

You'll have to take my word for it that I am not drunk. Please forgive my grammatical and spelling lapses.

(oh, i don't know if you plan on kids or are done or whatever, but i remembered this morning that a friend had them with only one, no problems--she had a non-functioning one inside her her whole life)

Poor ramix - feel better soon! Seconding the multi part fantasy book suggestion somebody made above - nothing takes you out of it more than curling up in bed & getting thoroughly absorbed in a good book.
