Do you know which is the post/comment in question, kenko?

That tears it. Jack Thompson's out of control.

Nope, iconomy. Looks like he's not inclined to announce publicly which it is, either, which seems sensible.

Do we know the law firm who are acting like unprincipled thugs?

Uh, that's all of them warbaby.

Disclaimer: lawyers in the singular are fine. But as with almost anything human, when they're grouped together in numbers greater than one, they can be total dickfucks.

I'm just interested in looking up the firm's history of ethics complaints. This seems like a particularly egregious example of barratry.

Fuck it. Set up a metafilter defense fund and lets see this one through to the end. Languagehat's response, although admittedly prudent, is an aquiesence to bullying. Unless, of course, he did say something bad & untrue. It's interesting that the people doing the suing are from the U.K. If anybody wants to accidently leak what was on his website to me, and if I don't consider it to be bad form., then I'd be happy to bang it on my own website with full "contact me" information.

Also, contact the EFF, and possibly Danny O'Brien. He has metafilter handle ntk, although I'm not sure his EFF commitments and metafilter loyalties are large enough that he could and will help.

Languagehat knows the identity of the firm. You can find out if he wants to reveal it to you by emailing him.

"We" don't know anything more than what he's posted, nor, I think, would we make public what he hasn't already made so himself. Y'know?

That business about "[w]e also require your proposals for compensating our clients for the serious damage caused to their reputation" seems like either

a) a trap to get lh to admit culpability;
or b) an attempt to browbeat lh into settling because the lawyers know they don't have a case.

posted by orthogonality 22 November | 19:07
dude this is the internet. also, they have no case.

with that in mind, i hope languagehat tells them to slowly and gently fuck the fuck off

btw ianal

LH has said "thanks for the ...." 282 times.

i don't know him but i totally think languagehat is the king of internets. i imagine whatever solution he deduces in the end is the most appropriate.
