While the usability quotient may have gone up, I think it could still use some prettifying.

Man, that is so wonderfully retro. I think I like how it channels the early days of web design when there weren't the tools that allow easy formatting, and web design truly was "programming". Sometimes I still yearn for those old days of ugly websites.
posted by eekacat 21 November | 17:03
Actually I think the retro design and the neutral, dark-colored background are serious strengths of Metafilter. Also, for all of the crap we give Matt about his rickety bespoke software, it does allow him to hack in interesting new features as he sees fit.

The new mefi logo doesn't seem to work properly in IE but looks OK in Firefox. Stupid IE.

Anyway, this is only a first step and it now looks pretty strange in relation to everything else. It'll be interesting to see what changes next...

Too bad mathowie ignored fandango_matt's excellent header creations.

Tell it it's stupid and I hate it.

Yeah, fandango_matt's were much stronger -- I particularly like his bold and decisive logo treatment. Oh well.
posted by killdevil 21 November | 17:21
killdevil, I agree with you regarding the basic design of the site. I like it. I was just being silly about the formatting underneath the banner and ahead of the links. It just made me think of the old days when people couldn't do design websites, and it came out all funky like this. Then they just left it like that.

Man, fandango_matt's stuff rulz.
posted by sciurus 21 November | 17:29
Yep, fandango_matt's are more attractive and more functional. Sorry.
posted by selfnoise 21 November | 17:30
Looks cluttered at the top. I hope he tweaks it more. Not really pretty yet.

Thought No. 1. Smaller. So more space for adverts.
Thought No 2. The tagline doesn't change. Boooo!
Thought No 3. Meh.

Ever since interrobang said that yellow part looked like a urine stream jetting out of a white penis, I can't look at the logo without smiling. But overall, I like it a lot. Glad he dropped the vibrations, though.

I take it back, I hate it. The "my comments" section is hard for me to read, I vastly preferred the old way. VASTLY.

The reason I no longer go to my old bipolar forums is they totally destroyed the readability of the site last time they redesigned it. Ugh.

I was referrin' to how the metafilter page was loadin' - Fixed now though, but it was wonky like that for about an hour, probably in the transition.

Looks great now!

Why is Ask opening in a new window? MeTa and the Blue don't do that.

(Don't mind new header - hate popping windows. I only want the external links to pop.)
posted by ArsncHeart 21 November | 18:14
Just curious - those of you who don't like the new header: did you prefer the old one or do you think this is a missed opportunity?

Personally I just think it's a move in the right direction.
posted by dodgygeezer 21 November | 18:20
Missed opportunity, most definitely.
posted by AlexReynolds 21 November | 18:21
Mah.

Heh heh, I mean: meh.

I find myself surprisingly indifferent. Which is really a snarky thing to say, I guess, but I'm being honest.

Grrr, iconomy. It's like the Game that I just lost - I can't stop thinking about it.
posted by muddgirl 21 November | 18:29
It's not quite a missed opportunity, but it's not as great an improvement as it could have been. Lukewarm.
posted by stilicho 21 November | 18:37
Personaly I found fandango_matt's logos ugly. It's like being on a train to Courier New city, and that's just not a train I want to be on.

Me Either. Heh.

For some reason, for the last several days the Big Blue has been the Big White for me. Even now I just see white with a small logo at the top simply saying "MetaFilter". Somehow I don't think that that's the change everyone else can see.

Yup, looks like it's time to take the advice of MANY and finally make the switch to FireFox. IE has pissed me off one too many times (and we all know what happens when I get pissed off...I'm sure my monitor doesn't want to get egged or something).
posted by mihail 21 November | 18:50
Meh is right. I'm going with missed opportunity. This isn't a redesign, this is regression.

fandango_matt's headers that agropyron linked to are much, much better.
posted by deborah 21 November | 21:00
I never go to the blue front page. I hope he doesn't start messing with lofi.
posted by tellurian 21 November | 21:11
Fandango_matt, your treatments are so much better than Matt's. Keep browbeating him and I am sure he'll figure it out eventually.
posted by killdevil 21 November | 23:04

posted by Doohickie 21 November | 23:52
Totally lame. Vote fandango_matt for web designer.
posted by agropyron 21 November | 23:59
I'm getting used to it now, I'll admit. The Mefi graphic is still yicky, though.
posted by selfnoise 22 November | 08:44
I personally like the slight asymetry of the new white blob.

Does anyone else keep clicking the wrong part of the screen where the links used to be but are now moved somewhere else?
