Speaking of mefi projects... There's a girl (not from France)/and they call her mrs. pants/and she draws real good/so vote for her, you should...[More:]

(That is if, unlike me, you can actually get your dang vote to record!)

I have no comment on what the women from Mars are up to, but my understanding is that it's something to do with cigars, but for some reason the men don't care.
Damn thing still won't let me vote. Numerous folks brought up the voting error issue in the MeTa projects thread but it hasn't been addressed yet.

It won't let me vote.

I'd have voted for your project, Melissa May, and mrspants, also.
posted by reflecked 10 November | 08:03
I wonder why that's happening? It's working okay here with FF 1.0.7.
posted by taz 10 November | 08:20
I'm using the same browser, taz. Hiram voted, I thought from home, but perhaps he did it at work with IE. I'll have to ask.
posted by melissa may 10 November | 08:24
I've tried Mozilla, Firefox, Opera and IE with no luck. Rest assured though, when I can finally vote I'll definitely be voting for both Melissa May and Mrs. Pants.

Maybe it has something to do with cookies, accepting them or not?
posted by taz 10 November | 08:41
I don't think that's the issue. I cleared all my cookies and then logged back in and it still didn't work. I made a MeTa post about it to give Matt a heads up.

What do the votes mean? I still haven't figured out what this Project project is supposed to achieve.
posted by mischief 10 November | 09:21
I think it's supposed to be a way of saying, "this is a business venture I would support." A way for someone to get a feel for how well their project would do among their peers.
posted by LeeJay 10 November | 09:25
I think lots of votes are supposed to encourage people to make a Blue FPP on the subject.

Like I've said before, this does nothing for me and I hope people with interesting but non-FPP-type projects aren't intimidated into not posting them.
posted by selfnoise 10 November | 09:26
Where then is the critical feedback? Blind positive support means very little to the creation process.
posted by mischief 10 November | 09:27
I don't think that's what mathowie intended (for better or worse) when he created the site. It's meant to incubate FPPs, which can then be posted to the Blue and commented upon.

Sounds like a way to game the self-link prohibition. "But look! I got 3 votes!"
posted by mischief 10 November | 09:36
(staying on topic: Mrs. Pants' art is awesome. I haven't had a chance to listen to Melissa May's music yet but it's on my computer)
posted by selfnoise 10 November | 09:39
It's designed to provide an outlet for the lust for legitimate self-linking. I think it's cool.

So I posted a project I've had running since last spring: The Brutal Battle for the Soul of Professor Mills.

Awww so much love here!

I'm shocked and awe and drunk on it.

(ps vote for melissa may!)

posted by Mrs.Pants 10 November | 10:38
If I could vote I would, mrs.pants and melissa may!

(btw in my brain mrs.pants doesn't rhyme with France and now I have a weird little non-rhyming ditty stuck in my head)

Gaspode, doll, I was quoting poetry. Matteo's not the only class act around here.

(Bonus trivia: Wally B's version is the one I grew up singing. Oooh la la!)
posted by melissa may 10 November | 11:06
Ha! Obviously I need to bone up on my culture.
posted by gaspode 10 November | 11:18
Oh, that's a great link! I had no idea of the diversity of the "Place in France" song!
posted by taz 10 November | 11:36
I always that it was "All the girls in France do the hoochie coochie dance."

Anyway...I voted for our melissa may and am off to vote for wife of pants.

Gaspode, if pants doesn't rhyme with France in your head, what does it rhyme with?
posted by jrossi4r 10 November | 12:09
jrossi4r, I have the NZ/English/etc way of saying "France".
posted by gaspode 10 November | 12:27
Yeah, I'm torn on Projects. I love being able to see what people are doing, and feel good about putting my own site up. But the votes system makes the thing feel competitive, even outside of the iPod giveaway. I dunno. It took me a few hours to stop obsessively rechecking my posting to see if anyone had voted, and then feeling anguished at the lack of votes (over that now, though).

And mrs.pants' comics are way cool.

Personally I'm using the Projects to force myself to get to work, lest I seem like some sort of lazy blowhard always jawing about stuff they're gonna make or do.

I'm a nervous maker-er of things so the number of votes equals the number of people I would be lying to if I didn't deliver up something.

I'm a loon.

posted by Mrs.Pants 10 November | 13:08
Don't worry about the vote thing. An alternative would be a click-through counter, but that would only tell you that people went there, not that they liked it. MeFi is large enough that sampling theory will take care of the rest, but the only thing that's ascertainable from the vote stats is that some people like the project or the author.

Also, please note that the voting is just part of the kickoff and this is still in beta. Who knows what our overlords will finally settle on as a feedback mechanism.

I can't wait for the book to come out, mrs.pants.

Seriously, I am really excited. Now get to work!
