Hooray! →[More:] I get to spend all day voting and then sitting in a courthouse all day for jury duty selection! All my civic obligations have been satisfied. As well as my frustration level. Sigh.
Jury duty selection loosely translates to "catch up on reading magazines".
The last time I went in for jury duty I got selected for a grand jury, which meant 2 days a week for two months. It was totally fascinating. For a day. Then it became the mundane rubber stamping of cases to go to trial.
The highlight was a three hour tour of the entire county prison on the first day. Illinois law says that prisons have to be inspected by a certain number of public citizens every year, and that number is about the same of grand juror's in my county, so the first day of grand jury duty is a prison tour. Hopefully that will be the longest I'll ever spend in one.
