Related seventies pop nugget anecdote: the two toughest women I've ever known, one a bisexual ex-drunk into S&M, the other an ex-con ex-junkie biker chick, both told me what their fvorite record (and first 45 purchase as kids) was- "Billy, Dont be A Hero" by Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods.
Aparrently, they also did a cover of Sweet's "Teenage Rampage," I tried to download it once but lost the connection. I'd still love to hear it.
You're cooler than I am, wolfdaddy. The first time I used a cassette it was to record the Hogan's Heroes theme off the TV.
Later, we would hide the tape deck behind the couch and attempt to record our parents in the living room.
*loquacious imagines wolfdaddy standing stark naked and grinning madly beneath some gigantic industrial smelter sized bucket that is filled to overflowing with boy bands and baby oil, reaching up to pull the lever that tips the contents all over him*
Speaking of teenage rampage, which boy bands would you like to be covered with, wolfdaddy? Overall, I think Backstreet Boys had the cutest guys. JC and Justin of 'nsync were cuties, but the other three were dogs.
I have a teenage daughter, which is why I know this stuff. For reals! I do!
Oh crap I just listened to it, and it's live. Is that the only way I can get it? It sounds like a cross between Ballroom Blitz and They're Coming to Take Me Away ;)
ico, thank you, but I already have The Sweet's version of it. I was looking for Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods' cover. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the original comment.
Sorry you went through all that trouble for nothing. i do appreciate it though.
also, boy/girl band theory/idea: Christina Aguilera, who has a nice set of pipes, should do a cover of Reparata & the Delrons teen heartbreak epic "I'm Nobody's Baby Now," with a full Spectorian complement of live musicians including strings and backup vocalists. if it was produced right (no dancy beats, no slick sheen) it would allow her to transcend her category.
Agreed about Aguilera, she does have a good voice though whether she can transcend typecasting one day, we'll see.
As to boy bands, well the Backstreet Boys do have a place in my heart, mainly because we all know Nick Carter is a sister (and needs to come out BEFORE he turns 68 dammit, though I suppose his stint as an XY magazine cover boy did say a lot). However I had the good fortune to have a friend who was for a time webmaster for The Ataris. Through him, I got to meet the boys in Blink 182 and, well, let's just say they can cover me any time they like. Very charming. And naughty. Very naughty.
My best friend in grade school and I used to make tapes pretending we were on a radio station. We'd sit there and make up fake news stories about our families, our teachers, our pets, kids in our classes, etc. And then we'd sing songs (badly). : )
I just found out I have to see an endodontic specialist for two possible abscessed teeth. Joy!
Ouch. Good luck. I've had a few root canals. After the second shot, it's not as bad as the hype, and leving them alone is dangerous, I know of which I speak. When I was uninsured I had a half-assed root canal done, and couldn't afford a crown and wound up losing the tooth and having to get more root canals later including an emergency one when I woke up in the middle of the night with the most intense pain (incl. the kidney stone) that i've ever felt. Dentophobia does not pay.
