Music Box I'm playing some jazz (mostly) on Radio Mecha. Please tune in, if you're so inclined. 'Tune in' isn't really the appropriate phrase, is it?
So far:
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane - Crespuscule with Nellie
Tony Williams - Two Pieces of One: Red
Antonio Carlos Jobim and Francis Albert Sinatra - I Concentrate on You
Tony Williams - Two Pieces of One: Green
this seems wonderful... and I'm trying to listen, but suddenly I have no sound at all on my computer... and my sound guy is out of town. Will keep trying.
Another update:
Roy Haynes - Solitaire
Sun Ra's Arkestra - Whistle While You Work
Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie - On the Sunny Side of the Street
Lionel Hampton - On the Sunny Side of the Street
Dizzy Gillespie - On the Sunny Side of the Street
Dizzy Gillespie - King Porter Stomp
Air - King Porter Stomp
I think you should comment on each song. But then, I appreciate the encouragement.
(The 'Time After Time' cover is from Cassandra Wilson's Traveling Miles, a wonderful tribute/cover album where Wilson writes her own lyrics for Miles' songs. And that Miles song is from the somewhat-forgotten L'Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud soundtrack. French noir and '50s Miles is a match made in heaven.)
More Update:
Cassandra Wilson - Time After Time
Miles Davis - Nuit Sur Les CHamps-Elysees (Take 2)
Benny Goodman - Sweet Georgia Brown
Duke Ellington - Switch Blade
Sir Duke used to be one of those folks I respected but didn't particularly like (Ella Fitzgerald collaborations aside), but then I heard Money Jungle, a fairly late album he did with Charles Mingus and Max Roach (both of whom I adore), and it was like a Zen master slapping me in the face or something.
And that Walt Dickerson album, Impressions of A Patch of Blue, is a regular lost classic of vibraphone playing. There isn't a whole lot of stuff that features Sun Ra as a sideman instead of a bandleader, so it's got an appeal for soundtrack fans, vibes fans and Sun Ra fans. Or, y'know, that's what I'm hoping, anyway.
Walt Dickerson Quartet - Alone in the Park, Part 1
Walt Dickerson Quartet - Alone in the Park, Part 2
Arcado String Trio - Living Bicycles
Max Roach - Tender Warriors
Arcado String Trio (again for you, taz) - Curve Ball
I've only really heard him with the Lounge Lizards, though after reading a review or two, and with your endorsement, I think I'll give his solo recordings a try.
Tin Hat Trio (w/ Tom Waits) - Helium Reprise
Tin Hat Trio - Old Gray Mare
Tin Hat Trio (w/ Willie Nelson) - Willow Weep for Me
Steven Bernstein - Meyer Lansky
In fact, I'm now such a fan of Tin Hat Trio that I'm going to go look for a CD... (which - hey!!! - sort of supports our whole position of the internet sharing thing being better instead of worse for music and musicians, right?) Anyway, thanks mucho for this introduction.
