People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people. I've just got back from a fantastic bonfire night. Fireworks, flames, toffee and baked potatoes. 400 years on, read about Guy Fawkes, then watch (again) the trailer for V for vendetta. Finally, listen to this song by Attilla the Stockbroker.
For more info on Aneurin Bevan, see here.

I wonder if 400 years from now we'll be celebrating Timothy McVey. Probably not, and I'd imagine people only like Guy Fawks because he gave them an excuse to blow stuff up and party.

McVeigh succeeded. Fawkes didn't. Properly, people celebrate his capture.

Like Guy Fawkes? Like? Yes, they like him so much they burn his effigy.

But really, he's just a proxy for the old Protestant/Catholic split.

Besides, if you mispronounce his last name just right...

Ooooh - you get mad points for linking to an Atilla the Stockbroker song.

Interesting fact: Guy Fawkes Day is not commemorated in Australia, but it is in NZ. Luckily, I happened to be in Auckland for the weekend. And it was great until I passed out from too much feijoa vodka.

I miss Guy Fawkes, not having been in a position to celebrate it since leaving NZ in 1977. It used to be my favourite morning, going around the neigbourhood looking for unexploded fireworks and collecting them up, then letting them off in the backyard. Of course, they mostly had very very short fuses, on account of having been lit once already. I found out the effect of this the hard way once, by being hit in the face with a skyrocket, spending the day in hospital and ending up being unable to see at all for two days. Ah, good times, good times.

I can understand the potatoes, but what's with the toffee? I mean, why toffee?
