I don't like that creature! Make it go away! It's like a lizard and a mammal and a potato bug and a window blind all in one.

I'd hit it.

I mean, I would like to have one for a pet.

I would name mine Stuart Pangolin.

I would also try to play it as a musical instrument, because that is what its name sounds like.

I bet it's fun being a pangolin.

Thanks for the links, moonbird.

I'm vaguely remembering an Edward Gorey reference to a stuffed pangolin. Or was it a fantod under glass?

Ah, pangolins. They nearly got me held back in kindergarden.
We were asked to name an animal with scales, and I said "Pangolin." My teacher told me that there was no such animal, and that proper answers were fish or snakes. I stuck to my guns and told her to look it up. This ended with a parent teacher conference where my parents were told that I needed to be held back to learn my place in the school and to learn to respect authority. My mother ended up homeschooling me for a year.

My boyfriend had a pet pangolin for a few hours. His dad found it on the street, took it home, and that night they locked it in a spare room. When they woke up it had kicked and/or eaten it's way through the door. A local doctor took it away and they reckon it was turned into some sort of medicine. One was found in Dhaka recently. Cool wee things.

klangklangston, it was really enlightening to go back to an elementary school and see how very young and ignorant most elementary school teachers are. (THESE are the people I had to defer to?) Suddenly so much makes more sense.
