Warriors, come out to playyyayy I totally missed this movie until a few weeks ago. They've been showing it to promote the new video game release. I LOVED it. I never saw it because it was a "boy" movie. I thought the same thing about "Jaws" and that's one of my favorites. What movies did you think you'd hate, but actually loved?
Well, my old circle of friends all saw the ad for Point Break and, well, it looked completely idiotic. Then we were sitting around one day talking, and bank robbery and surfing arose in the same conversation and we all thought: hell, let's rent Point Break. We watched it twice. In a row.

Never doubt surf movies -- I feel the same way about Blue Crush, dreamsign.

I don't think there was ever a movie that I thought I would hate and ended up loving, but there have definitely been several that I thought I would love, but ended up hating. I was really disappointed in The Princess Bride, after all the hype and worship. Hated it. And Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the worst movie I've ever seen. The coveted title of Worst Movie Ever used to belong to Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension, but now belongs to Hitchhiker.

Clueless. Never expected to like it, don't go for that sort of movie, but it's one of my favorites.

Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension is where we part ways, Iconomy. It is in fact the best movie ever.

Thought I would like "Portrait of a Lady". C'mon it had Campion, Kidman, Malcovich. Loved "The Piano," so Portrait would be a lock, no?
God, it sucked. We were roaring with disappoinment. I think I threw stuff.

My favorite movie of all time was a complete sleeper, snuck up on me. Thought it would be just another mildly enjoyable black and white film from the 50s. The Sweet Smell of Success.

I agree, Divine_Wino. I'd also like to point out that Highlander sucked shit, and consistently makes me wonder if I really know my friends at all when they wax poetic about it.

John Smallberries

I'm with dame. Admittedly it took two viewings for ST to click with me but I love it now.

I own both Point Break and Clueless.

I was once a complete film snob...French New Wave all the time! Now it's the films considered to be trashy, schlock, tripe, bubblegum by those same snobs that I tend to enjoy the most. In other words, a whole way of movie I thought I'd hate and now find I actually love. (Still enjoy some of the fnw classics, too).

My ex-girlfriend had to drag me to Happy Gilmore, and now it's one of my favorite cheer-me-up movies.

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Half Baked and
Intolerable Cruelty.
Harold and Kumar and Half Baked were just plain advertised badly. From the previews I thought they would be awful, but both were completely hilarious.
Intolerable Cruelty is the most underrated Coen brothers film, once again, due to bad advertising. It was advertised as a romantic comedy, and it was so much more than that.

I own Happy Gilmore, too. I'm starting to think a Pizza party would be fun.

I thought Shaun of the Dead looked too stupid to be funny, and it is in fact a brilliant flick.

Buckaroo Banzi was a true inspiration to me growing up. I mean come on, He's a scientist and a rock star, a doctor and a secret agent. That movie gave me direction in life.

I watched it again recently and discovered it's probably the reason my life is so fucked up.

Blue Crush rocks, Hugh J. And it's the movie that, until very recently, I would hold up to my sig other in video stores and, like an ass, say "this looks like a fine film" (displaying the girls on the cover). But it really is a very good film, with some amazing camerawork.

As for Happy Gilmore, I used to confuse Adam Sandler with that jerk... er... Pauly Shore, back when I hadn't seen either of them in anything. After Wedding Singer and HG, I don't make that mistake (nor can I imagine making it). HG is not bad at all. Unfortunately, I got it bundled with the less than great Billy Madison.

Starship Troopers I loved from the beginning, but I guess it's the same story in that the ads made it look awful. Also, I watched it once in the theatre, played the strategy board game, then watched it again, and the whole experience was transformed. I was like "No way you're going to win at Fort Joe Smith, dudes. I fought this battle." (faux surfer voice carrying over for no good reason)

next thread: movies that you thought you'd love, but actually hate. (that'd be a long list)

Incidentally, I've been prouncing your user name "Hugh JANus" until about five minutes ago. A little classical mythology is a dangerous thing. D'oh!

Bigbootay!

Point Break is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I think it could have actually been a good movie if the ending were different. Bodhi was an interesting character, but he got vengeful and violent in the last third of the movie, and it seems out of character to me.

I learned one of the great lessons in life from The Warriors: lesbians cannot shoot. The Warriors Revisited answers the question everyone has: "How did the works of Sol Yurick and Xenophon lead to packed chicks and bellicose mimes?"

Can You Dig It?

I'm the opposite of rainbaby. Love boy movies. Hate chick flicks.

And yet...

I've seen Can't Hardly Wait starring Miss Jennifer Love Hewitt about a squillion times. Also love Never Been Kissed and Drive Me Crazy (starring Melissa Joan Hart and a young and yummy Adrian Grenier.)

There is no reason for me to like any of those movies. But I do.
