music box While I wait for this pumpkin cheesecake to bake, here's some more Radio Mecha.
Right now I'm playing a bunch of songs with 'summer' in their name--Coleman Hawkins, Beat Happening, Express Rising, Cassandra Wilson, John Coltrane and Tom Waits' 'The Last Rose of Summer,' which will be, all by itself, a smooth title-y segue into 'rose' songs.
Passed 'rose,' wrapping up 'blue' and moving into 'black.' Who sings that 'Black is Black' song ('Black is back/ I want my baby back/ It's gray, it's gray/ Since she went away...)? Did they sing anything else?
I'm stuck here at work so I can't listen, but I can tell you that "Black is Black" was done by Los Bravos. As far as I know, they were one-hit wonders.
The credit for that particular number should probably go to the Jurassic 5 DJs, Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark. The J5 rappers are pretty good, if you're into that Good-Life-Los-Angeles-underground-positive-old-school-harmony kind of thing, but I like the DJs much, much better.
Each of the J5 albums features a few DJ songs, but if you like 'Swing Set,' you might also enjoy Cut Chemist's solo work, and his collaborations with Shortkut (Live at the Future Primitive Sound Session) and DJ Shadow (Brainfreeze, Product Placement, etc.).
It's the first time I've made this particular recipe, and I left it bare. I think I'm going to make another one fairly soon, though--do you have any glaze suggestions?
