The Sculptor. Calatrava called the shape of his building “helicoidal”, then drew a human body, torqued like a tennis player in mid-swing. He then sketched a tree trunk. Finally, he drew a lovely spiral, and explained that what he had in mind was a tall tower that rose organically, in a way that echoed natural forms.
Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso, Malmö.

I get slightly nauseous just looking at photographs of his torqued buildings, really. Disoriented, or something. Do they affect anyone else that way? I honestly don't think I could work or live in one, although I do appreciate the innovativeness and the creativity. If I think of them as art, as sculpture, then I can think....How beautiful. But if I think of them as buildings, I feel slightly askew, and sick. If I had to stand in front of one and look up at it I know I would lose my lunch.

I like the word 'helicoidal'. The only online reference I could find to it in literature is from Five Weeks in a Balloon by Jules Verne.

"The pipe running from the lower part of the balloon runs into this cylindrical receptacle through the lower plate; it penetrates the latter and then takes the form of a helicoidal or screw-shaped spiral, the rings of which, rising one over the other, occupy nearly the whole of the height of the tank."

Hey we were all about Calatrava for the Olympics. I like his stuff because it's architecture that really does embody what we sort of dreamed the 21st century would look like. It's very disappointing that we live in this almost mythical time that has been imagined for so long... and everything still pretty much looks the same. I wanted the whole Jetson's glam thing.

I would rather have a turing torso.

Wow, lovely stuff. I'm sure if I were still in design school, we'd have this endlessly jammed down our throats, but this is truly amazing work.
