Oliver's Army: who is the Oliver referred to in the song?[More:]Answer this question and assuage Monty's curiosity.
isn't assuage an odd word? it looks wrong even when it's right.

Oliver's Army is the song I always do in karaokes.

damn! I always thought it was a sing on the way to the pub Oliver Reed drinking song.

No, no, no! It’s about Oliver Hardy. If you watched The fighting Kentuckian, you’d understand.

It's specifically the New Model Army. What was so new about it? "It comprised professional soldiers led by trained generals, unlike other military forces of the era, which tended to have aristocratic leaders with no guarantee of military training."

This song is one of my pet peeves because, on consecutive lines, he sings, "Oliver's Army is here to stay/Oliver's Army are on their way." I know collective nouns take different verbs in American and British English, but in the same song?

I think it's weird for a different reason: if they're already here to stay, how can they be on their way...?
