I'm not a guy, so maybe I'm overestimating how big a deal this would be, but it seems like the potential for getting scratched by the foil package during, um, application is pretty high here.
Condom applicator (like this one, different brand) demonstrations first appeared at a hospital I was working at ~3 years ago, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Some of the nurses took samples home. The consensus was that the application was a little painful when the package was first held on the glans and "cracked". The company was hoping for an endorsement; they didn't get one.
The product uses innovative packaging design to help reduce the rate of infection by ensuring the user does not touch the condom which could possibly rendering it infected.
Everyone's hands are filthy, relatively speaking, and potentially ridden with germs and other nasties you might want to keep out of body cavities. Same reason why surgeons wear gloves. Seems like a good idea to me in this day and age.
