Ethylene at first mystified the hell out of me. Intrigued me. Then annoyed me. Then intrigued me again. And back and forth.

The apparently or overtly non-sensical posting of stuff and apparently incoherent posting of stuff - again - intrigued me and simultaneously annoyed me.

But then I thought to myself "Err, why does that even bother me? Why does it entertain me? Why should I even care? She's obviously comfortable with it, it's harmless, often sincerely entertaining and sometimes even intuitive, succint or enlightening. Fuck it, I'm having butter."

I won't bug Matt, eth, but only on your request. I still would really, really like to talk to him just so I could share my perspective about you.

And maybe help him see just because you're unconventional doesn't mean your automatically a threat.

I don't know what you did to get banned in the first place - the first time around, but I can only assume it was just you being your own mysterious you.

Well, often I cannot make head nor tail of what ethylene is going on about either, but I often find that with whole rafts of text on MeFi (even more so on MeTa), even though they are written in clear English with complete and proper punctuation and all. I mean, in those cases, I understand the words and the sentences, but they make no sense whatsoever when put together in that particular order. I think ethylene is pretty much the same - just because we can't understand her doesn't mean she is wrong.

Also, I think we have all had our turn at leaving MeFi in one way or another (some more publicly than others). We all know, though, that we can never stay away.

and for the record, he did admit to me (in an email i will look for if you need it) that he exaggerated the removal and repost of one askme post, so it seemed like i was a crazy spammer or troll.

i don't know if people bothered him a lot about me after that ban happened but i thought it meant i was allowed back after time off as others banned at the time had been back. like with quonsar, it just became permanment, because he felt like it and i did not ask him again. i just asked jessamyn. the record of that is also on this site.

iconomy's defense of me then (and all the others) are what made me decide to not "give up on metafilter" as well as the fact soomeone spotted me a fiver to get another name.

Your posting style has always seemed to me to be incredibly self-indulgent and affected. But, given that the same criticism is leveled against me, frequently, I've always figured that it's not that big of a deal. I mention it here, however, because if you can understand why so many people dislike my comments because they think they are too self-involved, too much about calling attention to myself or whatever, then surely you can understand why people would make the same judgment against you.

Honestly, my strong instinct is to make exactly that judgment about you. I just don't understand why you would be so aggressively different if you didn't have some grossly inflated sense of your own self-importance. So I make a value judgment about you and your comments. Yet, I always remind myself that other people make the same judgment about me, and I think that they are (largely but not entirely wrong) and so I force myself to "officially" refrain from judgment.

In the end, I think we all, and I certainly include myself, have to deal with the simple reality that while intent does matter to some degree, we can't avoid how other people perceive us and if we don't like how they do perceive us, we have some responsibility for changing that, if we want it changed. If we don't do anything to change it, then we must live with the consequences of how we're perceived, even if falsely, with some resignation and good grace.

Honestly, the fact that you're not terribly aggrevied about your banning, the way that some people who are coming to your defense might just be, is a clue to your personal integrity and that you are just being you, and not acting as you do because of a monstrous ego. So, good on ya.

It would suck if that's what he said, but I don't think that it's a fair reading of him to claim that's what he said. It's those types of comments of yours, ethylene, that make me question the claim that everything you write is written with good-intentions and in earnest and consider instead the possibility that it's a pose with which you are smugly satisfied.

Perhaps my tactic of being self-critical doesn't work so well. Even so, I'll try again. There's a good number of phrases I use, a certain kind of tone I employ, that gives people a very strong impression about my state of mind and intentions of when I wrote them. Honestly, I am personally very self-critical about these things and constantly try to figure out how much merit these judgments of other people there really is in them. It doesn't seem, my experience of myself, that I'm actually in my head the pompous, condescending person that people often see me as from my writing. But people do consistently see those things in my writing and it's completely fair to ask whether they're really there and how I can claim they're not but yet never change how I write.

Because the bottom line is this: I could still be right about my self-judgment but ultimately be wrong. I could be right about my intentions and state-of-mind, and yet my unwillingness to bend to accomodate norms of behavior and other people's judgments of me indicates, honestly, a certain amount of unattractive hubris. Why do I think I'm so fucking special? It's annoying to other people. Plain and simple.

About the post... I don't know. I certainly like kimchee (or is it "kimchi"?), and wish he or she hadn't left, but what is there to say about that? His/her post here explains exactly why. What is to be done?

I read very few of the political posts because I know I get too disheartened by various things, and would probably throw a snitfit myself. Other people, it makes them crazy, but they can't stay out of them, and many get mad and leave. I hate to see it, but I don't know what there is to talk about specifically in the case of kimchee, I guess.
