Welcome back, puddinghead. How did things go with your mom?

That's nice of you to ask, jrossi4r. Mom's now in a really good, pretty assisted living place. It's on the lake, they have cats, they don't nag her to join into activities. I'd rather be with her, but in the spring I'll move back home to Nowhere and then we'll re- think that plan. How're you?

I'm looking forward to moving into a rest home with activities, man. I remember when pips' mom had a hip replacement, they put her up in a rest home to recuperate. I remember when I went out for a smoke I glanced at a "schedule of activities" on the wall. It had "Thanksgiving with Tom The Turkey!" and "Art Class with Susan." Apparently, you live your whole life and work hard so that you can go back to kindergarten.

In honor of rest homes, here's an mp3 from the Holiday City Hot Cha Kitchen Band, a buncha tuneful spunky seniors.

I'm glad to hear you found somewhere nice. It's not an easy task, I'm sure. "Nowhere" is out in western PA, right?

Jonmc--just this weekend I was trying to convince my college friends that we should all pre-register at the local home. Figure if we all go together, it'll be just like dorm living again. Only this time the drugs will be (mostly legal).

yeah, I'm looking forward to old age. I'm already grumpy and talk endlessly about my ailments. I'll make a great codger.

I work in one of those places. Trust me, there's no rush.

Yup, western PA. It's not as bad as I make it sound. The people are extremely nice. There's one Thai restaurant and no Indian but about 500 good Italian places.

Yeah, jon, that's true. The only thing that looked like real fun was the game of chair kickball in the mornings. But, they've got lots of common areas with fireplaces and big TVs, Wednesday is beer and pretzels and on Friday afternoons it's wine and cheese.

I had a dream that I donated a computer and started a "getting on the internet" class. Some of the people are pretty sharp, just disabled and not able to live on their own. I might also work on some chair Tai Chi. I'm definitely sending a few CDs (hint hint). They play that Rod Stewart CDS of old standards ENDLESSLY.

Chair kickball?

Great, so at the end of our lives we have to worry again about not getting picked for the team? Shit.

Wow. That place sounds awesome. I may have to institute beer and pretzel wednesdays here at home.

Western PA is funny. For some reason, every one of my college boyfriends was from out there, so I've spent some time out that way. It's like a completely different state than the SE part.

Hey puddinghead - your Mom's new place sounds nice! Cats and a lake what more could you ask for?!

My Dad has been in an assisted living for almost 4 years and it has really been a good place for him. He still goes to the symphony and Friday night services, and they take them shopping and to museums and his doctor appts all the time. He really likes it a lot, and the people who work there are all very nice, too. They have a lot of things going on - Friday afternoon weekly movie, dogs come in once a week to hang out so they can pet them, card games, kids come in & sing, they do a lot of cool stuff. And we don't worry nearly as much b/c we know he is always under a watchful eye healthwise.
