23 October 2005
Mecha Mixswap. Don't forget that the deadline is Wednesday!
01-BOOKER T and the MGs / Hang 'Em High (Soul Limbo 1968) - My favorite cover of any of the spaghetti western themes.
02-STEVE DAWSON / Sweet Is the Anchor (Sweet Is the Anchor 2005) - From the solo debut by Dolly Varden's main man.
03-PINBACK / Non Photo Blue (Summer In Abaddon 2004) - One of my favorite songs of last year. The opening lyric could be appropriate for at least one beloved website: “She's posting all the time, but the boards are down.”
04-MOON MULLICAN / Seven Nights to Rock (1956 single) - Texas country and honky-tonk pioneer (and uncredited co-songwriter of Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya”) also cut some great early rock discs.
05-999 / Inside Out (the Biggest Prize in Sport 1980) - Worth it for the guitar line alone.
06-ROGUE WAVE / Bird on a Wire (Descended Like Vultures 2005) - Dreamy pop from Oakland.
07-the SONICS / Strychnine (Here are the Sonics 1965) - The Sonics made at least four or five of the most essential garage songs ever, and 40 years later they still sound dangerous.
08-the dBs / Never Say When (the Sound of Music 1987) - From their 4th and final album.
09-YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND / Think For Yourself (This Bird Has Flown 40th Anniversary Tribute to Rubber Soul 2005) - A band I never heard of until picking up this all covers version of Rubber Soul. A faithful arrangement but with some twang.
10-JOHNNY CASH / Thunderball (1960s prev unreleased) Johnny submitted this song for the Bond film but was rejected in favor of the Tom Jones title song.
11-HER SPACE HOLIDAY / The Weight of the World (the Past Presents the Future 2005) - Mid tempo electro pop dance number.
12-DAVID BOWIE / Up The Hill Backwards (Scary Monsters 1980) - One of my favorite non-hits from the Bowie catalog.
13-the DEL ROYALS / Always Naggin' (Grumblin' Fussin' Nag Nag) (single 1960) - New Orleans vocal group and a song produced by Allen Toussaint.
14-CORALIE CLEMENT / Ca Valait La Peine (Salle des pas Perdus 2002) - Modern French pop singer that is strongly rooted in the 60’s French pop scene.
15-XTC / Fly On The Wall (English Settlement 1982) - An often neglected song in the catalog of my all time favorite band.
16-EDITORS / Munich (the Back Room 2005) - Birmingham band that merges Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Interpol. Yet another band d’jour in the UK, but I think they’re better than most of the bands of the moment.
17-BEE GEES / Never Say Never Again (Odessa 1969) - If you only know the Saturday Night Fever era BeeGees you’ve missed out on about 10 albums of great Beatles inspired pop music. This is from their (sort-of) concept album Odessa.
18-PERET and ESTOPA / Lo Mato (King of Rumba 2000) - From an excellent collection of collaborations from Spain’s rumba rock legend with newer musicians. Fun. Fun. Fun.
19-CONSTANTINES / Good Nurse (Tournament of Hearts 2005) - Canada’s Constantines sound like a cross between a less angsty Jawbox and a toned down Jawbox.
20-NEAL HEFTI / the Mafista (Batman 1966) Fuzzy guitar instrumental from the TV soundtrack.
21-the FLESHTONES / New Scene (Hexbreaker! 1983) - It’s a dance party in under three minutes. From the Fleshtones’ perfect garage/pop album Hexbreaker! I’ve worn out two copies of the vinyl and for some reason this album is currently out-of-print, so this is from a vinyl transfer a friend did.
22-LEE HARVEY OSWALD BAND / Jesus Never Lived On Mars (A Taste of Prison 1994) - Glam rock times ten. Buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride.
23-FRANK ALAMO / Heureux Tous Les Deux (Happy Together) (EP 1967) - French pop take on the Turtles’ classic.
24-CALVIN BOZE / Looped (single 1952) - Calvin has at least a few songs about drinking a few too many, but this one is swings the most. Cheers.
Looking forward to hearing the mixes this round!

I grew up with a alove of punk rock and 60's pop songs - both of what tend to be under three minutes. I still tend to favor short songs that get in, get the job done, and get out.
01 - Dirty Three - Doris
02 - Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945
03 - The National - Secret Meeting
04 - Chad Vangaalen - Kill Me In My Sleep
05 - Superaquello - Stiki
06 - Laura Veirs - Galaxies
07 - Built To Spill - Randy Described Eternity
08 - Animal Collective - Grass
09 - Modest Mouse - Never Ending Math Equation
10 - Wolf Parade - Dear Sons And Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
11 - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Over And Over Again (Lost And Found)
12 - The Arcade Fire - Naive Melody
13 - Meredith Monk - Gotham Lullaby
14 - Six Organs of Admittance - School of The Flower
15 - Yo La Tengo - Blue-Green Arrow (7” Version)
I had a couple of extra things on there, but it was 79.5 minutes, and I didn't want to exclude whoever still uses 74 minute CDs instead of 80 minute ones, so I took them off (I just couldn't bear to dump the 13 minute Six Organs of Admittance track).
