This happened just down the block from my workplace. We were discussing whether to stay put or run like hell. We stayed, but it looked like everyone else on the street was running. And it is kind of creepy to smell gas throughout the entire building.
I guess the phrase "just down the block" is, while accurate, somewhat misleading. Our building is at least a third of a mile (probably closer to half a mile) from the accident site, and since I walk/bus to work I figured my odds of getting run over by someone evacuating in their Excursion was probably higher than being hurt in any explosion.
serendipitously, at the time i was engaged in some post-construction cleanup at a huge cold storage facility near walkerville, MI. biggest damn refrigerator i have ever seen in my life. would easily hold 4 football fields, with 36 foot clearspan from floor to ceiling. i was impressed. i was also cold. how i came to be there is also pretty interesting, but probably only to me.
so, a massive gas release near a taco boy, eh? i've participated in some of those as well. ;)
