Nice hand-drawn letters and things from the 2005 Graceful Envelope contest, sponsored by the US National Association of Letter Carriers and administered by the Washington Calligraphers Guild.

The winners, the honorable mentions, and the children's divisions. Some of the envelopes are too frou-frou for my taste, but the beautiful hand lettering and the attention to detail are really pretty damn wonderful. The theme was "something beginning with the letter P". Links to winners of years past here.
Neat. Thanks, iconomy. These remind me of the "thank you" note I got from one of my friends after her wedding. No fancy stationery, just a plain envelope covered in meticulously drawn, vibrant flames and the message, "Why did you let me do this? I am in Hell."

She was kidding. They're still happily married after 15 years. But it got my attention.

This is gorgeous and I would swoon to get such something of this sort in the mail. Thanks, iconomy.

Great find, iconomy. One can actually mail stuff this elaborate? I didn't know. A whole new world of postal mail opens up...

Thanks, these are great. I liked the kids entries for their general surprising quality.

When do you think things I see on the internet will stop making me feel like a talentless hack?

Never. I feel really inadequate on a daily basis - why should you be any different ;)

I wish I had that kind of ability... And here is where I just cut out three paragraphs describing what I meant by that. Trust me; you won't miss that text at all!

omiewise, you are anything but a talentless hack! You've made beautiful, beautiful things just with words... which I'm delighted you chose to share in internetspace... You are definitely and absolutely a star to me.

And ico, you know that you shine most brightly in my celestial universe. You are one of my most favorite people ever, online or off - so stop being so humble, it makes me look bad.

You used to be able to mail anything that you could print an address on. A friend of mine walked across the US as a teenager and as he wore out his shoes he would mail them - my ex still has an almost completely de-soled Converse high top with a note written on the side, successfully mailed from somewhere in the Black Hills to West Virginia. You can't do that anymore, sigh. Weird shapes won't fit through the machines.
