Dangit Thinkgeek (et al web-shops) , I hate paying customs fees on gifts sent to me!→[More:] Ok friendly people on teh intarweb, if you are a happy US person buying saaaay, off the top of my head thinkgeek baby gear for a pal in Denmark have it sent to your house first! Then repack it and then ship to DK. If it's sent straight to me from Thinkgeek it doesn't matter how big the bold letters read GIFT (dangit!) on the package, customs will not only inform me of how much it costs, they'll also charge me toll.
But yeah, thanks, it's great to get suprise gift - I just wish I had the cash to pay for it when it was delivered so I could see what the heck it was, and not only how much it cost. Darn customs. Pesky fees. *grumble* Now the suprise is ruined man.

sorry, had to vent. Wasn't prepared to be suprised by a nice big package delivered today and went from weeeee! fun! to "what the..?" in the time iot took the DHL guy to say "that'll be 450 kronor please".

I empathize. My bf sent me electronics.. from a store in the US..here to Canada. Not only did i have to pay an extra customs charge because it was computer hardware, but the GST and PST, too (sales taxes). It worked out that it would have been cheaper for me to take a bus across the border and buy my own.

Oh, man... I had the same thing - only worse. Someone sent me a package with just a lot of fun, silly stuff... thrift store things (because we don't have them here), old books, some file (dried sassafras for gumbo), newspapers... etc., and insured it for $50. And that's what I had to pay to get it from the P.O.!!!

Bastards.

It's like being sent a big bill as a present.

The best strategy with such things, although I can't say I've tested it, is to say you don't have the money to pay for it. They'll arrange to return another day when you do have the money, and naturally you ensure you're not there when they come back. After these two attempts the item should go back to the company that sent it. Everybody's happy!

Taz, that's the saddest story I ever heard! 50 bucks! Jeez! Damn, that hurts.

Aye, but after it goes back to the company that sent it, they'll charge my pal for the shipping and I get no pressies. *waaah*! /tears gushing

The dumbest just has to be that they (DHL and UPS) can't take cards or something. They want exact change for a packageI didn't even know was coming, upfront at the door or else I get no package. Send a bill or something. Jeez, how hard can it be. Maybe call in advance "hey we're gonan deliver X and need Y to pay for it, do you have this in your wallet at present?". Damn delivery guy refused to wait for me to go to the cash machine across the street. ARGH!
