What is your all-time favorite cartoon? (Show And/Or Episode)
I like that Simpson's episode as well. Also, the one where they housesit Burnsy's palace and Homer utters the infamous and strangely eloquent "Or what? You'll release the dogs with the bees in their mouth that shoot out bees when they bark?"
But seriously: The original Ren and Stimpy. Some Invader Zim. Some Spongebob. Some of the oldschool Bugs and Co. is nice too.
But I'm assuming "Cel Animated Funny Cartoons that were on Television At Least Once or Twice" is the catagory.
There's so much more out there, cel-animated or not.
"Rejected" almost killed me the first time I saw it.
But I'm assuming "Cel Animated Funny Cartoons that were on Television At Least Once or Twice" is the catagory.
Nah, any animations, be it Betty Boop or Reboot (yeah right) are fair game.
Bugs Bunny in "Hillbilly Hare" with Bugs doing the square-dance calling.
"Grab a fence post, hold it tight,
Womp your partner with all your might.
Hit him in the shin, hit him in the head,
Hit him again, the critter ain't dead.
Wop him low and wop him high,
Stick your finger in his eye.
Pretty little rhythm, pretty little sound,
Bang your heads against the ground."
Why didn't the Butthole Surfers ever cover this song?
* Clone High has its moments. (It's on in NZ for the first time right now.)
* Second Zim, and Dangermouse, and early Ren & Stimpy -- Canadian Kilted Yaksmen, anyone?
* Right now our (morbid) favourite is Happy Tree Friends.
* Many of the short little celebrity cameos on the Simpsons. The one I keep mentioning lately is Christopher Walken's reading of "Goodnight Moon".
Favorite Simpsons: the one about when Flanders opens the Leftorium. For some reason I just love Homer's irrational hatred for Flanders, it's a comedy gold mine.
Favorite Futurama: everyone loves the one about Fry's brother and I'm no exception. Apart from that, any episode with Zapp Branigan and/or Lurr is perfect.
[have you noticed how I can't remember any episode names and that I can't spell the characters names properly either? if it irritates any fanboys then that suits me just fine]
Favorite Ren & Stimpy: actually my favorite bits are the short little breaks like Log or Gritty Kitty, but if I have to choose an episode then I'll second the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen.
Favorite Home Movies: one of those cartoons where there's no middle ground, you either love it or hate it. I'd pick either the fish-eye lens or the one where Brandon gets run over by a pair of yuppies.
Favorite Tex Avery: you can't go wrong with Screwy Squirrel - a highly irritating mix of the worst characteristics of Bugs and Daffy. Tex was so far ahead of his time - comedy gold.
Favorite Tom & Jerry: the one where Tom goes fishing using Jerry as bait. Alternatively there's the one where Tom tries to get some sleep after drinking all night with his alley cat friends. There's not much funnier than cartoon cats getting pissed (see also Felix)
Favorite Disney: is there a better feature length cartoon than The Jungle Book? I seriously doubt it. Of their more recent efforts I'd say they've lost their way since the awful Pochohontas but Lilo & Stitch is nice return to form (and then they spoil it by ceasing hand drawn animation - damn).
Favorite Looney Tunes: I usually find Tweety unbelivably irritating however he/she/it is in my favorite. It's the one where Tweety, Sylvester and generic Spike-a-like dog are all in hospital with broken legs with the nanny as nurse. They squeeze in lots of really nice twists on the same old jokes.
Favorite British Animation: There's some great old kids shows but the ones I can still watch now are Bagpuss and Roobarb - worth looking up if you don't know anything about them. More adult cartooning of the highest quality comes from Bob's Birthday about Bob and his midlife crisis. Of course best of all is Wallace & Gromit - I'm very excited about the new film out next month.
Other stuff: Anything by Bill Plympton is good especially The Tune. Yellow Submarine is a big favorite or mine. The Iron Giant is criminally under-appreciated. I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out, but that'll do for now.
1. The Simpsons episode where Bart decides to skateboard down the mountain, and sneaks out of the house, and then Homer comes to rescue him and accidently starts skateboarding down the mountain. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.
2. The Ren and Stimpy episode where Stimpy loses his fart. "Stinky, Stinky, where are you??"
I will drop everything to watch Samurai Jack or Pinky and the Brain or Animaniacs. I also love old Merrie Melodies and Loony Tunes.
I also loved Doug, his dog Porkchop, his tighty whitey superhero guy, and The Beets. Ooo Eeee Ooo Killer Tofu!
Favorite movie cartoons: The Secret of NIMH and Princess Mononoke.
"What's Opera, Doc?" (kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit) and "Hair Raising Hare" where Bugs is chased by the giant orange haired monster have always been faves of mine. And I'm a sucker for any of Tex Avery's takes on Lil' Red Riding Hood.
At the moment I can't single out any specific Bullwinkle or Tom and Jerry, but I know there are many personal faves there. I'm also quite fond of the short before Roger Rabbit for all of it's over-the-top cartoon action.
Ren and Stimpy: Ren's Toothache
Simpsons: El Viaje de Nuestro Jomer
also Treehouse of Horror IV ("mmmmm forbidden donut...)
Futurama: any episode that includes the Hypnotoad (all glory)
I also loved Pinky and the Brain as well as the early episodes of the Beetlejuice cartoon and of course, The Tick.
Looney Tunes: The Singing Frog. Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal . . . . I was once at a Yes concert, and instead of an opening act they showed cartoons, and this was one of them.
I like cartoons a lot, and yet I don't have a favorite episode that I can name. My all time favorite was probably Starblazers, which I haven't seen since I was a kid, but it was the one I watched with the most fervor and still hold dear.
"Hair Raising Hare" where Bugs is chased by the giant orange haired monster--that's my number one.
And 2 Futuramas: the Space Bees one, and Fry's Holophonic Opera one, and an early Ren & Stimpy (the Space Madness one), and that Invader Zim with the time machine and the toy pig, and for visuals alone--Samurai Jack and Foster's Home. (probably some more too)
Show - Looney Toons, especially Chuck Jones's work.
After that, Animaniacs and Freakazoid! I'm not going to pick out individual episodes, but the opera parodies are definitely top notch. And maybe the episode where Yosemite Sam is trying to give up cussin'.
For movie-length, you just can't beat the Emperor's New Groove.
there is a simpsons episode where lisa gets high from drinking the water on a boat ride at an amusement park. i just remember her shouting at some point, "I am the lizard queen!"
It is hard to pick a favorite. There is an old Daffy Duck cartoon where he keeps arguing with the animator, who keeps drawing silly parts on him and dumping him into ridiculous backdrops. I love that one.
We watch a lot of cartoons in our house. I will actually pay attention to Samurai Jack, Foster's, and Teen Titans. Camp Lazlo has been pretty funny so far, too.
Anything Miyazake. I love all of them. Early Disney: Lady & the Tramp, the Aristocats, Snow White.
The Simpsons - all of them really but particularly the lizard queen episode, the one where they go to Duffworld, one of the first Halloween ones with the aliens playing Pong (god that was funny!) and the one where Colonel Klink from Hogan's Heroes is Homers guardian angel. I remember I fell off the couch from laughing.
The Tick, Pinky & the Brain, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Invader Zim. Underdog. And, okay, I confess: I love Scooby Do before the introduction of Scrappy Do. The animated Beetlejuice & Dungeons & Dragons and, around the same time, some show where these kids had been sent to the Flip Side? Of a record? Very 80s psychedelic. My all time childhood favorites were Josie & the Pussycats in Outer Space and Samantha the Teenage Witch.
I think I prefer Rabbit of Seville to What's Opera, Doc -- it may lack the brilliant art direction but there's just plain more stuff happening in it.
Did anyone ever see Alf Tales? This was a kind of add-on or spinoff to the (in many ways much better than the live action series) "Alf" cartoon. Alf Tales was like an updated Fractured Fairy Tales, and was incredibly funny. I particularly remember a Cinderella-like episode (with Alf playing a kind of Elvis in place of Prince Charming) in which the evil stepsisters were named Janet and Latoya.
Simpsons: the Guatemalan insanity peppers, where Homer is tripping his brains out and when he turns his head, his facial features go through his head and pop out the other side. "Oh no! I think I might have brained my damage!" Oh, mcgraw said it already.
My favorite Ren & Stimpy is "Space Madness". "Don't come any closer! Don't make me use this!" (Ren, brandishing a toothbrush.) "Look! You made me use it!" (scritch scritch scritch)
Invader Zim is awesome. I've got a bunch of my friends (who have only seen an episode or two) quoting Gir constantly. "It's meeee! I was the turkey all along!"
Spirited Away. The Little Mermaid. Sleeping Beauty.
But Rejected is far and away the cartoon that's made me laugh the hardest. I really thought I was going to pee my pants. I want to marry Don Hertzfeldt. And check out his comic strip.
Favorite Simpsons: Last Exit To Springfield (aka "The Strike Episode"). Followed very closely by The Monorail Episode.
Favorite Tex Avery: "Dangerous Dan McFoo". Contains one of the best fight scenes in cartoon history.
Favorite Chuck Jones: gotta be "The Dover Boys", the cartoon that inspired John K., creator of Ren & Stimpy.
Favorite Bob Clampett and possibly my favorite cartoon of all time... (drum roll, please)... "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery." If you've ever wanted to see Daffy Duck machine-gun a robot eating an upside-down candy cane, this is the cartoon for you!
oh George--you reminded me -- Sherman and Peabody and their Wayback Machine!
2 Stupid Dogs, hands down. Why aren't reruns of this on anywhere, or available on DVD?
There was one ep where they were in the Brady Bunch house--hysterical!
amberglow: Peabody's Improbable History, Fractured Fairy Tales, Aesop and Son and my personal fave, The World of Commander McBragg; what they all had in common is they always closed with a truly terrible pun. How many cartoons can you say that about?
I have a certain warped fondness for 1970s-era Saturday Morning cartoons in which the characters always had a band and always did at least one song. Especially the Filmation ones -- The Hardy Boys, The *gasp, choke* Brady Kids, every goddamn one of them. I'm vaguely surprised that the Star Trek animated series, being a Filmation production of that period, didn't have the bridge crew performing some saccharine pop ditty in the last five minutes, over abstract pop backgrounds. Can't you just see Scotty on drums, Uhura on keyboards, Spock on bass (or that groovy Vulcan lyre). The funny thing about Kirk is that the animated Shatner was a better actor than the live action Shatner. You know you're way over the top when a kid's cartoon version of you has more dignity than you do.
