For the uniformed such as myself:

The grimace or "lip curl" that characterises flehmen appears to facilitate the transport of non-volatile, excreted compounds to the vomeronasal organ, enabling males to evaluate the reproductive status of females.

Huh. I thought it was only cats and horses that did that. Apparently (ha! that belongs in the over-used word(s) thread) deer(ish) species do it as well. Who'da thunk it?
