"Get off the fucking freeway" [More:]
Just as dusk set in, a Gretna Sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces, screaming, "Get off the fucking freeway". A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck with our food and water.
Q, thanks for this. I've become a "Real Story of NO" junkie over the last week. This promises to be a good read. I've skimmed the first bit but can't take any more time here at work. I plan to jump in further when I get home this evening. There will be stories, indeed.

Charmaine Neville [windows media] is the daughter of Charles Neville of the Neville Bros. This is her website: http://www.charmainenevilleband.com/

I picked this one up off of the neworleans.indymedia.org site.

There's a ton of other stuff there, word on the street type stuff, and direct rescue/aid/self deployment stuff, police altercation stuff.

It'd be possible to mine some of the better stories and articles and make a proper FPP post to the blue with it, but there's just so much Katrina crap there now... I'd just have to say "Meh."

Also: People miss you, quonsar.

Thanks for sharing this... I've been so shocked and angered by the things I've read... I've been wanting to hear more from the people themselves and am so sick of those who are trying to paint fellow Americans (human beings) as sub-human savages of some sort.

That's the most shocking account I've read yet.
I don't know why..I kept thinking some of the reported negative things were just haphazard or embellished a bit - the cross-ocean distance from here or something. But this is just astounding and depressing. I can't imagine what would be going through the officials' minds -- or perhaps, sadly, I can. I'm sure we're going to hear of many many more similar stories.
Thanks quonsar.

I can't believe that asshole of a commander told them there were busses just to get them to move. I'm livid.

Oh, my god. Charmaine Neville. Everyone needs to see that.

Today is the first day since even before the storm hit (when I first started watching day and night) that I told myself "absolutely no Katrina news" (aside from regular email from friends), because I've been a news zombie, and going a little off the rails... But I'm glad I broke my vow. I have no idea what is being seen on U.S. television, but that clip needs to be seen.

quonsar, thanks a lot. That is one chilling story. Jesus fucking Christ but it makes me angry as hell.

holy fuck. That report and Ms. Neville's report has me in tears again. This whole situation has just been so fubar. I'm so angry and I just have no idea what to do with all this anger.

Good lord. I don't know how this is being portrayed in the US media (and to be honest I don't think I want to know) but there's something seriously fucked up over there.

while msnbc was showing massive fires raging on split screen, the FEMA chief was just on live tv saying (not exact quotes) "the rebuilding of new orleans is underway" and "there will come a natural time to unleash this tidal wave of helpers and we will do it" and "the house to house search has begun".

it is 9 days 8 hours since the storm hit.

They're starting to turn away the reporters. The next time, it will be martial law and embeds only.

Where is Charmaine's story? I went there just now and didn't see it.

It's the first link in this comment - the windows media file.

That's a great piece. Will be passing it around the office tomorrow.

Ah, gotcha. I went to her website, not the other link.

I'm still wondering when the pitchforks and tar is coming out.... Right now I'm afraid this won't stick to the teflon-prez in charge.
