What's a good name for a dog?
My first dog's name was Henry. I always thought that was a good name.

In general, I like real names, not adjectives or cutesy-isms.

I actually have a list of dog names in the event I get a dog someday. Right now my favorite name is Beetle.

Dexter. Dudley. Butch.

Male or female? Large or small dog?

That depends on the name, I guess.

Or if you intend to take the dog to the park, you could name it asshole or dickhead. "C'mere asshole! Asshole, c'mon asshole! Good asshole!"

My cat's name is George. I like people names for animals. Bruce, maybe.
posted by gaspode 23 August | 14:25
Hugh, doesn't one usually get a dog first and then name it, rather than the other way round? /smartass

Small, female, Cairn terrier-ish: Pippa
Large, female, bloodhoundy: Hilda
Medium, male, black lab-like: Frizell
Large, male, Rhodesian Ridgeback: Atom
Medium, male, goofy breed: Cholo
Small, female, Jack Russell: Speck (of course)

I could do this all day.

On preview: actually knew a dog named Shithead.

Oh yeah: Chewbacca is one of the best dog names evar.
posted by Specklet 23 August | 14:27
Yay! I'm a dog!

Actually, Feisty would work pretty good.

I vote Snoop

All the usernames are rad for the doggies.

taz? Yeah!
mudpuppie? Well, duh!
mcgraw, Frisbee, Capn? Yeah yeah yeah!

Okay, if you were a dog, what would you look like?
Specklet would of course be a Jack Russell. Utterly adorable, very smart, and snuggly as heck. Ahem.

(I knew a cat named Shitfoot, named for his first significant action. In polite company, the owners called him Shiitake.)

"doggygeezer" is genius.

I think the name Hugh Janus might be even more inappropriate at the dog park than Asshole or Shithead. Though I have no idea why.

I don't have plans to get a dog. If I got one, though, I might name him Man, or her, Woman. Or U. Probably not, though.

Donko. That's it.

Akita became a familiar sight to commuters as he kept his vigil for over ten years.

Sorry, I cut off the quote when I cut and pasted, it should read "The Akita...", Hachiko's breed.
posted by Specklet 23 August | 16:13
Also, from experience I can tell you that Champ is a great name for hound dogs.

Fang. Or Killer. : )

The dogs I've had were/are named Prince Myshkin the Magnificent (Airedale, my parents got him before I was born. We just called him Myshkin), Winnie the Pooch (Welsh Terrier, we just called her Winnie) and now Barney (Welsh Terrier. His name when I adopted him from the shelter was Barnum and I changed it a little. Since he was 6 and a half when I got him I didn't want to change his name too radically.)

Nimrod or Shadrach. I've heard it's good to name dogs name with two syllables, with a hard sound between the syllables: like Fido, Buster, or Shadrach. Someone told me they recognize names like that better. But that might be a bunch of bullshit.

My Mom once said that she wanted to name a dog either HELP! or RAPE! or FIRE! so that she could go outside and yell for the dog.

I knew some guys that had a dog named DRUGS! They called it home every night.

the spellchecker recognizes Shadrach, but not Nimrod, go figure

I've never named pets in advance... I get them, I have them for a few days, and then one day I call them something. I think it's the best way, but then again I have a cat named Isabella Bella Bella Banannarama Teeny Weenie Mousallini ("Bella"), so what do I know?
posted by puddinghead 24 August | 00:18
I met a dog named Slobber Underfoot. Yes, that was his real name.

Hugh, doesn't one usually get a dog first and then name it, rather than the other way round? /smartass

Actually, I already have a name for my male pug and a couple female names to ponder over (should I ever be lucky to have a pug).
