Yeah - they coexist quite happily. I've seen them where the plant takes up the whole top of the bowl, and that's not good for the fish. Bettas need to come up to the surface sometimes. Since this plant is small and the bowl is big, there's plenty of room and the roots give him somewhere to hide. The plant is a miniature peace lily. I rinsed all the dirt off the roots (that was kind of fun) and then made a sort of grid of silver wire at the top of the bowl. The plant is threaded through the grid to hold it in place.

Taz, look what else I found for you! I think these are really nice, but the funny thing is I found them while googling for octopus wind chimes.

Straights Sling

2 oz Gin
1/2 oz Cherry Brandy
1/2 oz Benedictine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes Orange bitters
juice of 1/2 Lemon

Shake with ice and strain into tall glass willed with ice. Garnish with lemon, lime and orange slices and maraschino cherries.

Fill with Soda

Serve with straws
