Retake Metafilter Back To The Future Day I will regift a $25 GAP giftcard to the best Metafilter FPP on 8 August 2005-- the best FPP that contains the words "ethereal," "bligh," and "smells".
This is a serious offer. The words need not be sequential or in any order. Words must appear on the front page, not in some "more inside" cop-out. Homonyms or clever near-misses of "bligh" are acceptable. Final judging will be done by someone who doesn't read metafilter and could care less about the outcome after I determine eligibility. "Smell" is not being used in a literal sense.

Yeah, but what do you get out of it? A gift certificate to the Gap, just for being an asshole? Doesn't seem worth it.
posted by interrobang 02 August | 02:18
a lot of people would probably think of it as being paid to do what they love.
posted by invitapriore 02 August | 02:35
Exactly. No offense, Mayor Curley, but I think we're treading into dangerous territory here.
While it's fun to offer up a contest related to links, the frequent use of prizes cheapens the quality and intent of MeFi even further. Must we reward clever arrangements of hypertext with bounties, rather than gratified compliments? Will people attempt to find discussion-worthy FPPs for the sake of sharing something interesting, or more out of desire to earn some phat lewt?

Taken to its ultimate conclusion, MeFi/MetCha could become a hipster scheme. Each week, clothing, used iPods, and travel discount coupons could be given to the wittiest of the bunch, or any schlub willing to accept a dare. Sort of like a "craigslisting2.us".

This is great. I think I'll give $25.00 to the best post praising me as a God. With side prizes for best virginal sacrifice and the best religious text.
posted by seanyboy 02 August | 06:24
Make sure you give your worshippers plenty of water - otherwise, they might start piling rocks in your driveway.
posted by Smart Dalek 02 August | 06:36
One need not be an asshole to do this actually. I've already thought of a way that I could work those three words into an FPP I have intended to do for a while now but have been to lazy to actually post. Of course I would be too lazy to do it on the 8th as well, but anyway.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 02 August | 06:59
I should add that the FPP which I had already started but never finished/posted already contained the words ethereal and smell, which can easily be changed to smells. I just wanted to let you wonder wtf it is going to be about until I actually post it sometime in the next five or six years. Do not expect the word "bligh" in it when I do post it though. heh
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 02 August | 07:04
Does anything at Gap even cost less than 25.00?

Note: I did not ask if anything at Gap was worth less than 25.00 - I already know the answer to that.
posted by iconomy 02 August | 07:45
Just as well that I hate Gap stuff.
posted by Orange Swan 02 August | 09:40
Capt. Bligh, Capt. Kirk, Capt.Jack--on the ethereal nature of leadership, fictional or otherwise. Is being a leader simply a matter of smells and pheromones?

I think anastasiav's contest was great because it had, as a stated goal, to make the front page better. I'm not sure this accomplishes the same thing.

Keep your trolling to Mefi, Mayor Curley.

I approve of this contest.

Can we use sockpuppets like eponymous blargh?

I'm not actually going to post anything, but i like clarifying groundrules...
posted by Schyler523 02 August | 11:18
Mayor Curley is just jealous of EB because EB is smarter than him.
posted by Quartermass 02 August | 11:27
Keep your trolling to Mefi, Mayor Curley...This is the sort of thing I'm talking about, MC.

mcgraw, you should totally try to win the contest. Maybe I'd put my return address on the envelope and you could more effectively threaten me. Except that you can't because you got banned for stalking dejah420. And then as "mcgraw" you got banned again for stalking me. But you could still enter as "breezeway."

If breezeway wins, I will send you 50 bucks worth of Risperdal, you crazy diamond!
posted by Mayor Curley 02 August | 11:57
Fuck you, Curley, I'm breezeway. You're barking up the wrong tree.
posted by Hugh Janus 02 August | 12:26
Fuck you all, I'm breezeway.

This contest is stacked towards EB, though. Think about it: for us to enter, we have to come up with a combination of "smell", "Ethereal", and "Bligh". All EB has to do is make a post with the word "smells" in it, as "by Ethereal Bligh" will automatically be appended to the bottom of the post.

Y'all must be in cahoots.

I have never threatened you and I never will, Mayor Curley. Just voicing my preference that you keep the trolling and antagonistic remarks where it belongs-- on Metafilter.

When we had a dispute, it was because you came onto my (dfowler) thread, ridiculed me without provocation and then bragged about what an asshole you had been.

I wish you well, Mayor. I have no interest in making enemies, even with you. It's not up to me when you post here of course. Perhaps we could just keep it friendly. Maybe even you and I have some similar ideas.

Later, Mayor.

You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth!!

Mad props for both reading and remembering my Mefi user page name origin description thingie, too.

Permission to be confused?
posted by danostuporstar 02 August | 13:34
Permission granted.

Mcgraw and breezeway and hugh janus and mayor curley may be 4 people, or they may be less than 4 people. If less than 4 people, some of those names may be sockpuppets of others of those names. One of those names had an issue with another one of those names, and now they're discussing which are sockpuppets of which, if any, with disagreement had by all.

Personally, I think email would be better served, because Metachat isn't exactly the most serious medium, but that's their choice, and far be it from me to stop them.

Thanks for the mad props.

I actually thought, "mushipan?" the very first time I saw "bugbread." I lived in Tokyo (Taito-ku, Yanaka 3-19-10) for three years at the end of the last century. Mushipan is nice on the morning after trips to izakaya and karaoke bokksu.

Before I deafen myself with my own horn, though, I did read your user page. I like your posts (though I don't hit meffy anymore). It's great to have occasional conversations about Japan with folks who know.

On preview:

Look, I'm Hugh here, and I was breezeway there, but I got sick of meffy for my own reasons which I've elucidated here in the past and I refuse to return to. Those guys had their tiffs, but breezeway was never anyone's account but mine, and I don't know how I got tied in with them.

I don't care one way or the other, because breezeway is as dead to me as meffy, but I'm tired of seeing my own earnest contribution dragged through shit to serve someone else's arguments and accusations.

I can promise you this much, bugbread: if you ever see a new post by breezeway on meffy/metta/askem, it is not by me, and the poster does not have permission to use the account.

I'm Hugh here, and I always will be, unless more of this nonsense is dragged over here to poison the site. Then, I won't be anyone.
posted by Hugh Janus 02 August | 13:49
Hugh: Kinda cool that you did the "Bugbread → mushipan" thing in the exact opposite order that I did.

As for whether or not you're breezeway: well, to be honest, I don't bother trying to think about sockpuppets. I know Rothko is Alex, but I'm not sure why that stuck. I know bunnyfire=konolia. That's about it. I take posts at face value of the poster, so you'll always be Hugh to me, and breezeway will always be breezeway, not because I'd remember the distinction, but because I'd forget that there was any hypothetical linking of you and breezeway in the first place.

But, on the breezeway tangent: was breezeway (er...were you) the guy who did a lot of image posts, or was that someone else?
posted by bugbread 02 August | 13:56
(Oh, and thanks for complimenting my posts. Unfortunately, either I spend too much time writing them, or too much time reading Mefi, so I have a billion posts and zero FPPs. Ah well)
posted by bugbread 02 August | 13:57
I am not in a position to criticize anyone for multiple accounts (even if I wanted to, which I don't), so this is out of pure curiousity: Hugh Janus, breezeway is fairly new username at MeFi, but here I've heard you speak of being an old-timer. Is there older MeFite user you posted under. (I'm curious but not that curious, so feel free to ignore me.)

Mayor Curley. w t f ?
Are you just trying to say you don't like EB? Or you think that he's done something so incredibly offensive to you that you think that group mockery will ameliorate the offense? Man-o-man, you are one MeFi member who has seriously had me in stitches at times. You are one FUNNY fuck. But jesusHkryste, what do you do in real life when you don't like someone? Vendettas, zabosearch & dogshit in letterboxes, hitman hiring, prank calls & car tampering????

What the fuck is it with vengeful people in an online community? I seriously don't get it and I spend waaaaaay too much time at MeFi etc for my own good and although people shit me from time to time, I just can't imagine that anyone typing words on a screen would cause me to plot/incite against some faceless apparition. Ever.

After that vaginal plug episode I though you had a time out kinda thing. Wasn't it enough?

Unless you are trolling/joking then you really realllllllllly need to take 2 steps back and go spend some time with your fiancee. Chillthefuckoutman.

And what the fuck is this doing here? Go put it on the grey and see what the community thinks of the idea. I'm imagining it will be an ...err.....interesting thread but I doubt you will come away unscathed. I've half a mind to post it there myself but that would be a little vengeful and lawd knows I've got enough of my own faults without adding pettyness to the list today.

bugbread*: I posted lots of images until I received word to cool it. So I did.

danostuporstar: Yes, there is an older account, one with a checkered past that will, sorry, remain unnamed. I was tired of posting under its burdens and wanted to make a donation anyway, so I started breezeway and changed my tune.

*I just typed "bubgread," and even though it's a nonsense typo, I thought it a funny word and said it out loud to myself until I chuckled. Try it.

How's about we just generally keep the craptastic personal vendetta and the encyclopedia browning of other posters out of here? Because it tastes like Coors Light on MeFi and it tastes like flat Coors Light here, and I'm home sick and yakking my brains out today as it is.

It was a joke. More about anastasiav's contest and getting rid of some stupid gift card. But I should have picked a universally liked person for the focus. I thought "X Smells" was obviously playground enough that it wasn't mean spirited. Oh well. I'll still send the giftcard to whomever does a good job with the challenge.

Wino, hon, I believe in your divinity. Don't test my faith by advocating for low-cal carbonated Adolph pee, I beg of you.

I thought "X Smells" was obviously playground enough that it wasn't mean spirited.

The problem is that there are a lot of people on MeFi who are both playground and mean-spirited, so the presence of once doesn't necessarily indicate the absence of the other. Good to know you weren't being the jerk I read you to be.

It helps if you look at it like this: Whatever it is that makes me what I am, can partially be attributed to drinking Coors Light for breakfast while I search the culverts and dumpsters for my pants, as much as all times I've sipped Laphroaig whilst chucking little morsels of Crab Loouie to careening sea birds from the two person canoodling (grown and sexy) balcony of my custom built party blimp The Queen Anne's Goiter. I am Oscar and Felix all in one package, a caviar encrusted corn dog as it where.

Goodness gracious. That was the sexiest stream of consciousness I've ever heard from a man with cheap beer on his breath and corndog and caviar stains down his shirt.

I am not nearly so ravishing after a day of hard booting, as a well-placed cam would attest. What's your secret?
