Delectable pop truffle Tuesday lives on! Devin Davis - Iron Woman (direct link to Mp3). Totally unpretentious, this song is part John Cougar Mellencamp / part Brian Adams with a little Bruce Springsteen thrown in for good measure; straight ahead pop-rock the way they used to make it in 1984. Check out that sax solo!
I like it!

It's been a rough couple of days, so my creativity is down, still Young Americans is a better pop song than you maybe remember it being.

BTW anyone have any different ideas for a dump site than YouSendIt? I don't love downloading from there, it takes about 5 clicks per song.

Use a gmail account? I've opened one we can share, but I don't want to post the password here for all the world to see. Email me at profile address and if I know who you are I'll give you the password.

Did you say A Pop Song?

Freda Payne - Band of Gold. Amazing? Yes. Pop Song? Yes. Motown? Yes. Girl singing? Yes. Listen to it every morning when you wake up and you will be able to shoot rainbow colored orgone rays out of your genitals all day. That is fact!

As always, I can't participate, but I'll throw in my two cents: Sail On Sailor - The Beach Boys.

Quartermass, I should add that I quite enjoyed that linked song.

And speaking of delectable pop truffles . . .

For Hugh:

Beach Boys - Sail on Sailor
. The opening track from the Beach Boys disastrous album Holland from 1973. Recorded mainly in Holland, Brian didn't show up, and the lead vocals on Sail on Sailor weren't even recorded by a Beach Boy. Dennis was supposed to sing it, but he was too fucked up to record his vocals (the lead vocals were sung by sessioneer Blondie Chaplin instead).

Most of Holland was produced by Carl Wilson, who was doing his best to keep things together. The results were hit and miss, except on the other Holland highlight The Trader, with lead vocals and production from Carl, this is his best piece of music.

Thanks, Quartermass. That's really interesting.

If there's a crazy story behind Sloop John B. or Help Me Rhonda, I'd love to hear it.

"Help Me Rhonda" was one of the last songs that sounded like the early years (Surfin USA and it's ilk) before Brian's creative turn toward the orchestral pop of Pet Sounds and Smile!, and was sung by second tier Beach Boy Al Jardine.

"Sloop John B." was on Pet Sounds, and remains of the best known songs on the album. However, Sloop John B. was recorded as a single before Brian started work on Pet Sounds. It was tacked onto the album by Capital in order to increase sales (as was often done at the time).

Wow, cool. Thanks, Quartermass.

When I was in second grade, Mr. Baranson played guitar and had a singalong with all the kids in the grade for fifteen minutes or so before everyone went home.

Sloop John B. was the most popular request.

bmarkey, you uploaded xml files instead of mp3s. Can't play those.
posted by matildaben 02 August | 20:52
What the... wow. OK, sorry about that. Not sure what happened there. Aside from the fact that I'm an idiot, I mean. I'll see if I can't get some actual mp3s up when I get home.
posted by bmarkey 02 August | 21:03
OK. I figured out the XML deal. Yay me. But now, when I try to send the mp3 to myself, yousendit is telling me that my link has expired.

*sigh*

I hereby admit my pathetic nature and throw myself on the mercy of whoever might read this. What the hell am I doing wrong?
