My wife has opinions on things... [More:]"My wife has opinions on things that may or may conform with mine and I think most couples are in that situation," Santorum said...

then again, he may or may be an asshole.
I wonder what his wife's opinion is on their children having a last name that now means the frothy mix of fecal matter and lube that sometimes accompanies anal sex.

Wow. He even LOOKS like an asshole. And that's some stupid shit coming out of his mouth.

Oh come on, everyone knows what these women are like: you allow someone to murder their baby and then she won't cook your damn dinner!

So, wait . . . Most couples are in a situation where the wife has opinions on things that don't conform with those of the husband? "Conform"? As in "comply with" or "surrender to"? "Obedience", anyone?

With these guys, I can't tell the pigs from the swine.

I'm a rabidly liberal as the next MeFamily member, but isn't this guy simply saying "Don't judge John Roberts on what his wife does, they're different people."

It just seems like he's having a go at those people who assume that a wife and husband should agree on everything. As I would.

"May or may conform" is probably a transcription error. You know what it means.
The word "conform", although unfortunate is understandable in this context.
The fact of the matter is that the most constructive thing you can do with this is take the mick out of how Santorum looks. And his name.
"oooh - he looks like Peewee Herman. He's got a stupid name. ha ha ha. He must be wrong."

Your hatred of the right has robbed you of all reason. If I was PP, I'd be laughing my head off right now.

seanyboy-I think you're forgetting the vilification of Clinton (Bill) for having a wife who could think and string sentences together. That Santorum is now suggesting that thinking wives are ok is the worst kind of hypocrisy.

Santorum's views on women (book excerpts)

Santorum talks in his new book about how mothers shouldn't work, but at the same time, he borrows money from his parents (the Senate salary isn't enough, apparently)--who both worked their whole lives.

I would normally agree with you, seanyboy, but these people aren't like you and me. They are political animals, and they present a united front. As goes one, so goes the other and we're all supposed to understand that.

Santorum's on the Daily Show tonight.

Meanwhile, that Roberts looks not like Bill Murray, but like Major Frank Burns from MASH. He's already smirking for the cameras like Bush as well. (unless his hemorrhoids are acting up?)

hatred of the right has robbed you of all reason

because of course, we all remember eight years of the right's polite, "she may or may agree with her husband" treatment of then-private citizen Hillary Clinton

this is post-Ken Starr America, seanyboy. the right's whining on this thing is just, well, silly (not that one expects good taste from a man who thinks gays are like people who fuck dogs).

Mrs Roberts's ideas must now be about as relevant as 1992-1999 Hillary Clinton's ideas were. the rules of the game changed. and it certainly wasn't "rabid" liberals who changed them.

I am sure that seanyboy, unless he's been robbed of all reason, is willing to concede this point. new game, new rules.

and by the way, imagine if Breyer's wife had been a doctor who practiced abortions. just imagine the reaction of the DeLay crowd

I actually have been robbed of all reason. As evidenced by my usage of the phrase "robbed of all reason".

And in other news... "They Started It."
and "No, It Was Them. They started it first."

You can't play fair with these people anyway, seany--they don't. Everything is fair game nowadays, and they're in public life, so too bad. It's also that this guy has no written record to go on, so we have to look for whatever indications we can find about his views. It's definitely one of the top 10 most important jobs in the US--and it's for life. I've already heard they're telling him not to reveal anything or answer anything of substance during the process--the bastards.

Yes, seanyboy, that's it exactly. And what amberglow said.

You play "fair", or do the right thing, for its own sake, not whether it's effective. Or, as many would argue (including me) you play fair or do the right thing because, in the long run, doing so has the greatest utility. But if you don't accept either of those ideas, and it's all about short-term and obvious (personal or group) utility and defeating one's enemies, then go fucking assassinate someone or something, maybe Scalia.

What doesn't make any damn sense to me is that almost no one really believes life is a free-for-all and yet most everyone thinks that the proper behavior of everyone should just coincidentally favor their personal interests and predispositions. How likely is that?
posted by kmellis 25 July | 21:55
Playing fair and doing the right thing when the people in power are not, and never do the same, is a fool's game. We have a murderous treasonous bunch in power now and they'd kill their mother to keep power. You don't defeat them by playing fair--you lie and slander like they do. You destroy reputations like they do. You make sure everyone knows what a corrupt bunch they are, fair or not. Were the Swift Boat Liars fair? Was Karl Rove fair? None of them would bother being even human, let alone fair to any of us. Look at how they treat people who dare to disagree with them. Look at how they slander and defame and lie every single day. ...

The only people I can take seriously who say that are the ones who are holding rifles and molotov cocktails as they speak. If you really believe this, get off your ass.

Otherwise, read the Phaedo again.
