22 July 2005

102 with high humidity [More:]I got so hot I came inside and cut my own hair. Super short. It didn't seem to help much.
You need to eat it.

It takes some time, depending on how long your hair is, and where you live, before your body cools off. I estimate, for you, it will be about 3 months.

I just gave mudpuppy some advice akin to this: drink hot tea. I know it sounds insane, but it works.
posted by Specklet 22 July | 18:47
To follow Specklet, and this is serious advice: Do not take cool showers, take hot showers. Wisdom I've picked up from some article about people living in Saharan climate. It works.

It's a mild 104 at 18% humidity today. "Feels like 103." High was only 111.

I'm so tempted to buzz off every inch of hair I've got, but the GF would strangle me.

Marx and Specklet obviously don't live in hot climates, and enjoy teasing those of us who do.

Meanies.

You know how people say "it's the humidity, not the heat"? It really is true. Growing up in NM, triple-digit temps were not unfamiliar to me, but living in Austin for eight years I learned that triple-digit temps with high humidity is a whole 'nother ball game. Now back in Albuquerque, I find that 98 degrees with low humidity feels refreshing and relatively comfortable. People will say, "It's hot, huh?" and I'll reply, "Is it? I didn't notice". In Austin, in contrast, I felt like nature was trying to kill me all through the summer.

Beer, AC, and so-called "video" games help beat the heat while catsitting in Manhattan. One can only tame the galaxies so many times, though.

Perhaps I should snowboard.

Same here, loquacious, though in my case it's the BF. I may just have to pick up the clippers and deal with the strangulation, though, given that it's going back up into the 90s here this weekend. (And yeah, I know, everyone in an actual HOT climate has it worse than me, but they probably also have A/C, which I do not.)

mudpuppie: try it.

16c here and a glorious midwinter day.
posted by dg 22 July | 19:28
16C midwinter?? well you obviously don't live in a cold climate.

Hot showers work, even in humid climates. Hot tea does not.
posted by bugbread 22 July | 19:54
marx, i've actually experienced the hot-shower-in-summer phenomenon, but not by choice.

My parents' house (now "my parents' house," but also "the house I grew up in), is in the country. The bedrock is a mere 6" below ground and, as a consequence, so are the water lines. In the summer, there is no such thing as a cool shower.

Been there, done that, it doesn't help. Maybe it's better if you want to take a hot shower. But when it's forced on you, it loses its appeal.

one last thing. the hot showers should not be sauna style half an hour break out a sweat showers. In, get wet, get hot, soap around, rinse, not repeat, get out. 5 minutes max.
(this isn't just for you mudpuppie, since you seem to have some special case of omfg that's hot, but for reference)

OMFG THAT'S HOT!

then let me refrain an old farkism: this thread is useless without pictures!

It does help, wearable and the undead chairs, trust me and your barber.
posted by Cryptical Envelopment 22 July | 21:49
So... does this mean we have to change your user name to "weretable and the undead hairs"?
posted by taz 23 July | 00:33
I have done the hot & cold shower both. Cold works better for me. As an added bit of evidence: When I swim, I am in cold water for an hour or two. I am never as cool as the hour or two after said swimming. That closes it for me: COLD shower.

105 here and 30-60% humidity. And of course, I was outside and touring a non air conditioned house. How people survived in Texas before central AC is a mystery.
posted by PsychoKitty 23 July | 22:43
Cryptical - "wearable" and the undead chairs? is there something you are trying to tell me?

i won't change for anyone, taz! erm.

fun fact: a couple years ago my hair was down to the middle of my back. i found a pic on my computer earlier. i looked like an ass. yes.

i might try that warm shower thing although i sure do like a cold shower after i have been working outside in the heat. the hot tea otoh... i haven't learned to like tea yet. so that's a no go for now. =)
