Danger Will Robinson! A while ago I reminded people to check their browsers were up to date. Well since then there have been more secuirty updates. Firefox 1.0.5 is out now and contains 12 security fixes. Internet Explorer is affected by one of the three security updates released yesterday so Windows users should go to Windows Update to get themselves up to date. Be careful out there.

So funny. I never use IE except to check the web pages I create, to make sure they are working (or not, more likely) in Explorer... But I thought, what the heck, I'll go update anyway. And after briefly seeing a "Windows is now checking to see if you have the latest version, blah, blah" message flash by, of course I get this error message:
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I love how the Mozilla site sends you to the hackrus site to get the app, but when you go to hacksrus, Firefox goes all Buzz Lightyear on your ass: "Whoa whoa, hey there, now! We, uh, disabled those pesky pop-ups for your protection. Heh heh heh, wouldn't want you getting hurt or anythi- What's that you say? Oh, you meant to do that...Dadzilla sent you here specifically? Oh...oh, yeah, of course! Go right ahead!"

I've found I've had to uninstall all the old versions of java kicking around before installing the new one otherwise it complains or tries to use the wrong one. If you posted your comment in Firefox then your javascript must be working - if you posted your comment from IE then I can understand why you're pissed.

Oh, sorry to everyone else. My bad.
CAUTION: FILM SPOILER!!

The new version seems to be a short bus special. If you open up multiple windows and an earlier window doesn't connect with the designated home page before a later window does, it's dead in the water. Weird.

i haven't noticed that but any extra extensions are far too much of a bother with what i'm surfing around right now. i never used any on my last upgrade either.

ditto. MeCha has always hung for a few seconds before loading, but in the past day that lag is much greater.

ON PREVIEW: it took almost 2 minutes for this to go from preview to post...

Hm. Firefox isn't telling me there's an update (no little tree thingie in the upper right corner).
posted by deborah 14 July | 15:26
deborah, it didn't show up on mine either, but I did see the press release yesterday morning and if you follow dodgy's link, it takes you to the download page for the new version.

regarding my java problems: i deleted the manual installation and got an .xpi file from here http://java.sun.com/update/1.5.0/jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586.xpi , saved it to my desktop and then dragged it into firefox and let it install from there. now everything works hunky-dory!

deborah, there's also a "check for updates" button in Tools | Options |Advanced...
posted by quonsar 14 July | 15:47
Thanks, q, but it kept saying it couldn't update specific extensions and nothing about the browser. Weird. It's updated, though, followed dodgy's link. Can't have the geezer having conniption fits over browers.
