Eccentricities and quirks So tell us some of your odd little habits or things you do that you deem perfectly normal but have other people raising an eyebrow...
Inspired by the fact that I just got given a lot of shit for insisting that the ice trays in the fridge get rotated, so we don't have old ice. I've always done that!

Only if you do first, my dear.

Oh I'll think of more, don't worry.

I always check to make sure my keys are in my pocket three times before shutting the door.
I also refuse to eat onions, although I will eat things that contain onions.

I hate being sticky.

This came out in the... what thread was it? I brought up obsessions/compulsions of symmetry, and said that I've managed to break out of it. Now I tend toward mental countdowns. Event soon to occur? Pick a number and pace (and don't deviate) and see how close you get. Car passing on the street. Television show returns from commercial. How many steps it takes to make it to the bathroom (my sig other confirms that this last is a good way to occupy your mind and stave off your need till you can make it -- if you don't underestimate!). But then I used to be in air traffic control, so estimating speeds and distances was kinda my thing.

I do that too, dreamsign! I also like to predict where on the subway line my song will end.

lookin' em in the eye

Dude! er... dudette! Gotta love the beauty of headphones and a rapidly changing environment. High school was like one long music video when you're walking halls and turning corners -- especially with anything with a fast beat, because chances are that so many things around you will fall exactly in time. And on a good day, even a slow song will seem perfectly choreographed on the street. Just on the topic of music and timing.

For a real treat, roam the streets listening to the soundtrack from the remake of Solaris. (but don't do it while driving heavy machinery.) /derail

sounds like you know how to walk to the rhythm of life
i love letting life get me there right on time
i think it's compensation for the sucky parts

I'm often incredibly absent minded. Like going to the corner store, coming back and then immediately going to the store again. Forgetting the names of people I've known for years and see often. Forgetting where I'm going and ending up all disoriented. These are only the things I've noticed, mind you.

Sometimes I push my glasses up further on my nose without using my hands by sort of scrunching up my nose and opening my mouth really wide which inches the bridge up a little bit. I don't even notice I'm doing it but every so often someone will catch me and crack up. I imagine it does make me look a bit deranged.

Also, I make a very wierd, low sound in the back of my throat when I'm really nervous. You have to be very, very close to me to notice but it's strange.

Ah, dreamsign, I love that soundtrack.

Always having a beat in my head, I tend to snap absentmindedly a lot. Sometimes this is combined with foot tapping. It never fails to to get me made fun of when I do it in public by accident.

Well, and of course I sleep with a pillow under my feet, not my head. I guess that might count.
posted by gaspode 13 July | 22:18
I sleep with one *over* my head. Does that count?
posted by mudpuppie 13 July | 22:19
I don't eat raisins.
I talk and sing to myself.

i like to be face down in fluff for comforting sleep.
i'm a starfish sometimes
i usually like to have at least one leg out but lots of smushy luxury
you sleep better at lower temperatures
yet in winter one wakes and returns to sleep without question or interruption

Sometimes I push my glasses up further on my nose without using my hands by sort of scrunching up my nose ...
I used to do that all the time, then I got new glasses and didn't need to any more, but kept doing it for months anyway. I started doing it because I was working with nasty chemicals a lot, so couldn't use my hands to push them up and it just stuck.

Now I tend toward mental countdowns.
Thank [insert deity of choice] it isn't just me! I always thought I was a bit loopy for doing that. That, and counting steps it takes to reach things.

I fiddle with things when I am bored. or when I am not bored, but my hands are not busy. Drives some people berserk. I don't care.

Thanks, ethylene! Your post inspired me to watch Run, Lola, Run tonight, and it was exactly what I needed. Been feeling very down lately, with no end in sight. That kind of put me on the right-place-right-time vibe (to a techno beat!). MUCH better. :) :) :)

i hiss like a cat

Hehehehe. Last time a waiter tried to take away my plate before I was ready, I actually growled at him. I've been known to bite but... not usually perfect strangers. However, I growl a lot.

It's so dreamy, invitapriore. I get days where it's my mental soundtrack without end, and the day is just... fluid.

and of course I sleep with a pillow under my feet, not my head

Best thing to do when you can't sleep due to general restlessness? (and you have to sleep, so can't just prowl around all night) Flip around, head at the foot of your bed, feet by the headboard. Different, and comforting somehow.

You people are all freaks! In a great, Amelie-world kind of way. (dg loves: counting steps to things, fiddling, and fig newtons; dg hates: having to scrunch up face to position glasses, nasty chemicals, and cats who mewl) :) Sorry. It's the high after the low (and no, I'm not M/D, just happy)

I ask myself what day of the week it is constantly. It actually drives me a little nuts: it's like having Brak living in my head

I always have music on. Always.

I don't like my food to touch each other.

Regardless of temp, I sleep best beneath something heavy, with open windows and travel with my 'Linus' pillow.

I forget my own name at unspectacular moments.

I rub my feet together as I'm waking up.

When I'm concentrating, I either push on my nose or crook my finger around it. (I've been working on knocking that off for quite some time, but recently saw newborn photos of myself and was doing it then. Probably a lost battle, that one.)

I face money.

I groom people: tuck in tags, straighten ties, adjust collars, point out crooked plumblines, etc. Sometimes, without thinking, I do this to near strangers. *couch* yeah, no bueno.

I smell and touch just about everything (you know, with in reason...usually.) Museums are an outright nightmare for me.

I'll lose my keys three times a day, but for the last 20 years have constantly had a small blue marble with me. I have no idea where it came from and rarely notice it until someone else points it out. WTH?

Public showers disgust me beyond rational explanation.

Toe cleavage makes me blush and look away.

[And, gaspode, old ice is gross! Rotating is a must.]

*flies freak flag proudly*

I face money
If, by this, you mean that you always make sure you put your notes all facing the same way, I am with you all the way. I don't care how long the line is, damnit! I am going to put my money away neatly and you can damn well wait a few more seconds while I do it!

Exactly.

I used to deface money. Pasted googly eyes to the queen on twenties. Just for pay-at-the-table restaurants.

I remember you.

When walking, I constantly smell flowers, take bits of leaves that smell good (lavendar, sage, lemon balm), and make who I'm walking with smell/taste them.

I love bees with a passion that knows no bounds.

I must have my woobie before I go to sleep: an old soft t-shirt that I put over my eyes so I can still sleep after it gets light.

I can't stand it when money or books are on the floor.

I growl, talk to myself incessantly, touch things, smell things, rearrange things (in other peoples homes!), cuddle a pillow when I sleep, crack my knuckles and other parts, tap my fingers, love my cats beyond reason.

Those are the things I've noticed. I'm not sure I'd want someone else to list my annoyances.

Specklet, "deborah" means "bee" in Hebrew and I've collected bee things since I was a kid.
