Mix-up Rolls Out. If you submitted a mix you should now have received an e-mail containing the download details. If you've been missed out then please e-mail me. You can discuss the mixes here although most people seem to have posted track listings here.
By the way, here's the cover for my mix including tracklisting.

I goofed.
Track listing, cover art and track name say
09 - The Postal Service - Iron And Wine.mp3 4:10
That should really be
09 - Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights.mp3 4:10
I was not sure which I wanted for the mix and somehow screwed them both up. I have the Postal Service version if you want it via e-mail.
Sorry.

I was racing the clock, utc timer counting down in one browser window, but I just couldn't satisfy myself that it was good enough in time to upload, It was fun in a 24 kinda way, although I didn't kneecap anyone, which is probably why I didn't finish it in time.
I don't rock the internet at home for any number of reasons, but it's times like this that make we wish I did. Next time fer sure.

You Can Do What You Want. I'm Goin' Home.

01 - Godspeed, You Black Emperor! - Dead Flag Blues (edit).mp3
02 - Kammerflimmer Kollectiev - Sie tranken Regen.mp3
03 - Hochenkeit - Two Fish Kissing.mp3
04 - Polmo Polpo - Rottura.mp3
05 - Jackie O Motherfucker - Pray.mp3
06 - Papa M - I Am Not Lonely With Cricket.mp3

08 - Stars of the Lid - Anchor States Part I.mp3
09 - Dead Texan - When I See Scissors, I Cannot Help But Think Of You.mp3
10 - Loop - Shot with a Diamond.mp3

As explained in my readme, I made this as part of a 4 disc set late last year. Every year I send mix CDs instead of Christmas cards and this past year I offered up my mix to anyone on my music mailing list who paid the shipping. Ended up sending out over 160 of them. I also sent all 4 as part of CMonkey's swap (hopefully none of you were on that swap as well).

There is a large printable PDF of the full color art for all four discs here (10mb). The covers were designed by MeFite Al_Truist while I barked orders. I then printed them on sticker paper and they were attached to cardboard sleeves for cheap mailing.

dodgygeezer, thanks for making this whole thing so painless!
posted by dobbs 11 July | 17:00
Since I'm bored I'll describe the mix I did:

01 Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band - A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit Gets to a Diamond
I love the Captain - not his finest moment but it is bunny related and probably one of the best song titles ever.

02 Marshmallow - Casting Couch
Some mellow pop lovliness with a barbed lyric about the fame game

03 David Essex - Gonna Make You A Star
A classic pop gem with lots of great moments. You know this guy played Jesus, and he's been in a film with Larry Hagman - not at the same time though.

04 The Pretenders - Back on The Chain Gang
Chrissie Hynde is so cool and any song with grunting in it is alright with me.

05 Chas & Dave - Rabbit
More rabbit related nonsense - a bit of London Rock n Roll

06 The Len Price 3 - Shirley Crabtree
A song about a fat wrestler called Shirley - a true story. I'm going to take every opportunity to ram this band down peoples throats - they're fast and fun.

07 Brendan Benson - Alternative to Love
He's been called a one-man Big Star and with good reason. This is a slight departure from his usual sound.

08 Steely Dan - Green Earrings
This sits uneasily here but I love the Dan.

09 Peter Blegvad - Daughter
Probably the best lyrics I've heard in a while - simple and beautiful.

10 Richard & Linda Thompson - The Sun Never Shines on the Poor
This is quite cheerful for Richard Thompson. "Your last penny rolls through a hole in your jeans, ain't that the way when you're down"

11 Split Enz - Six Months In A Leaky Boat
I remember playing this to a miserable bastard and he was smiling like an idiot. He was probably drunk though.

12 Junebug - Bitches
Another unknown British band. They describe themselves as The Ramones meet the Beach Boys - well you've got to admire their nerve.

13 The Len Price 3 - Christian in the Desert
It's these guys again - and this time they sound Kinky

14 Tunng - Tale From Black
Acoustic guitars meet computers and it doesn't sound like shit. Woo!

15 Loudon Wainwright III - To Be On TV
My favorite track off his latest album. "When you turn the TV off perhaps you are aware, of a presence on the screen, a figure in a chair"

So there you go, a pretty mixed bag. I think I'll rock out on the next mix I do.

Copied and pasted from the other thread:

I ended up calling this Sweet Melancholia; there's nothing hugely obscure, and it runs from blues-ish through to Southern rock, country, and folk. Requirements were that it be slow and gorgeous (with one sort-of exception). If it's here, it has, imo, a melody to die for, a huge swoony chorus, or both.

Tracklist:

01 Church In Calhoun. Boxharp, The Tailored Soldier
02 Drunk Kid Catholic. Bright Eyes, Three New Hit Songs From Bright Eyes (EP)
03 Driving Through Texas. Summer at Shatter Creek, Summer at Shatter Creek
04 Look On Down From The Bridge. Mazzy Star, Among my Swan

Reposted from the other thread:

OK, to make up for the lack of musical content and the staggering mediocrity of the content that does exist, I wrote a bit about why I chose each track:

Drive|Time

Hello
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Pink Floyd [1:59]
Just something to start things off on a light note - it's only music, so don't take it too seriously.

It Never Rains - Dire Straits [7:54]
I love the way this song gradually builds and builds as it progresses, starting out very low-key and growing in presence.

Drive
Jump in my Car - Ted Mulry Gang [3:03]
A song from my younger years when cars were one of the most important things in my life. This sums up a lot of the stereotypes that exist about young males, most of which are true.

Baby, You Can Drive My Car - The Beatles [2:26]
As above, a song from my car-focussed days. Hardly new or unusual, but no collection of songs about cars would be complete without this.

Grey Cortina - Tom Robinson Band [2:11]
When I was about 18, I had a grey Mk II Cortina (well, more dirty white, actually), pretty much the same as the one described in this song. I was so chuffed that someone had written a song about "my" car, that the song has stayed with me ever since. Even then, it did not receive much airplay but, for all its simplicity, I love it.

Radar Love - Golden Earing [6:22]
Ah, the days when Gary Glitter and T-Rex ruled the airwaves. Radar Love was one of my favourites then and still is.

Time
Echo Beach - martha and the muffins [3:38]
I think that everyone has their own "Echo Beach", where we go in our head when work gets too much to bear.

Time - Pink Floyd [7:06]
tickingaway.org - what more do I need to say?

Time of Your Life - Green Day [2:35]
This song was sung at a friend of mine's funeral several years ago and I hear it sometimes when life gets me down - I hope that I can say, when I am old and looking back at my life, that I had "the time of my life".

Goodbye
The End - The Doors [11:47]
This is the end ...

listening to the m3u's first in picking around--
it is infinitely bizarre where my collections overlap with the others-- this is where you all feel more and less real to me as opposed to frisbee girl and seanyboy threads. i copied all the tracklistings but was waiting to hear them first for that fun fond surprise.
following the path of least resistance, i'll find a way to translate the less immediately gratifying/ instantly playable folders when i get to everything else i keep having to put off.

big uncharacteristically overtly chipper thanks to all, esp. the geezer for getting me in the mix as i would have missed the deadline again otherwise.

Once again, mine looks like the playlist from the local top 40 radio station in the 70s compared to the offerings of others. Must try harder to be hip and obscure next time.

dg, I listened to your mix this evening. I loved it, esp. that Ted Mulry Gang.

bdave, you have the ultimate "get drunk and throw your arms around people singing loudly in their ear" song (for me anyway). Aaaahh "Reckless".

Dobbs, the 4 cd set is really great. I'm horrible at making mixes, but I love to hear new music. You have interesting & diverse tastes in music, in a good way. Thank you very much.
